re: Question about teen daughter keeping computer in her room at night

If you let her keep it in her room then you're asking for trouble. Kids are too stupid to protect themselves so you have to be the one to do it. Who cares what the other parents do? She doesn't know anyway.

The use of technology is probably here to stay and those jobs are better than average.
However, no computer savvy needed at all to operate this device.

Tell her you trust her, then tell her you don't trust anyone else. Have a discussion on the dangers of hacking and just put a sticker over the camera.
If someone can hack an artificial heart, they will hack your computer. Hell, there were threads on here about school officials using the school issued computers to track and watch kids at home.

A 14 year old girl was naked in her room and using FaceTime on her laptop and talking to an older boy that I know. Depends on how much you trust your daughter.
good lord. I didn't have a phone or laptop when I was 14

I'd also consider taking the computer away on school nights once HW is done and then letting her have it on the weekends.

If I had it to do over again, I would take all electronics away at night. The texts alone keep them up way past bedtime. Not good for school nights.JMO

Epoxy over the camera lens.

By far the best paraphrasing of Caddyshack I've ever seen...
"Well. The world needs ditch diggers too!"

Good idea. Could be watching porn.

What teenagers want more than anything else is independance. Give her as much independence as you can now because it won't be long before she will be out on her own and it's your job to get her ready for that while still under your supervision. Otherwise she will rebell.
Like someone else said, you can monitor her computer use remotely to ensure she is following your guidelines.

Say what they will. My son has is a sophomore. He was issued an iPad last year and also has a phone. It's not even a thought. All electronics stay in the front of the house(not in the bedroom). He also does not have facebook, twitter, or any other social media. His coaches have set him up with scouting sites, but that's it. He's a 4.0 student, doing well in two sports, has a great circle of friends and is focused on school = my goal. The same will hold true for my next 3 behind him.

You keep telling yourself that if it helps you sleep at night.

It is your house and your rules. She is your daughter and your responsibility. Raise her as you feel appropriate. I applaud you for standing your ground and being a good parent. There aren't enough parents with a backbone anymore.

My neighbors had backbone. Didn't let their daughter do anything. They both turned into raging whores.

You're probably in the minority but most parents give their kids phones at tablets starting at like age 3 so they don't have to do their job so I would say on most issues with parenting being in the minority is not a bad thing.
