Amen. HOAs destroy the concept of private property. If I wanted to be a commie, I'd live in California.

what about when the developer controls the HOA illegally and refuses to relinquish control but your neighbors are too lazy and stupid to fight them. and the developer "hires" its own employees to do CAM work at 10X market rates? Is it still trash to stop paying?
What neighborhood is this?

a resort in Idaho. And to the person who said you sue, those aren't mutually exclusive. but suing in a state where most of the owners don't live (it's near the WA state line and almost no owners actually live in the development, or even the state), when your neighbors are being foreclosed on, etc, isn't always feasible.
and when you have a developer who lives for lawsuits (huge national company whose main business isn't even real estate), the little guy is at a huge disadvantage. i just quit paying HOA dues and told them to sue me. I got my way without going to court.

If I had a choice I'd rather deal with a HOA than a city historic district committee.

So you think it's anti-Communism to disallow freedom of association and power to make contracts? Makes perfect sense.

At least up here the Landmarks Commission is made up of political appointees from the NYC Mayor. If you want something to go through there are many ways other than an application to do so.

You can't stop people from being stupid and joining most HOA's if that's what you mean.

HOA dues are stupid
My HOA dues are $260 a year, and they're used for upkeep of the common areas, the ponds, playground, and our community pool (which is kept immaculate). Our dues are anything but stupid.

Before I respond further to you or your ilk, I need to know that you understand the founding principles of our great nation.

Guess it all depends on where you live. My HOA dues are $1,500/year. However, that covers multiple pools, a gym, paved trails, play scapes for the kids, grooming of the common areas, trash. Also covers the entrance/exit gate with a guard on site 24/7.
That said, it's a very nice neighborhood with some very expensive homes. The last thing I want is some hood rats walking around the neighborhood looking for what they could steal, or some trashy neighbor junking up their yard and driving property values down.
An HOA can be a pain in the arse, but they also help to protect your investment and that is needed in some areas.

There are 46 homes in my neighborhood and 15 of us are not a part of the HOA due to having a different home builder that did not require us to sign a HOA contract when our homes were constructed. They tried to trick some of us into voluntarily joining by sending us contracts in the mail. But word got out quickly that we did not have to belong to the HOA unless we choose to be. Hell no. All of our next door neighbors belong to the HOA but not us.

I have access to a brand new pool. Pretty sweet for a miniscule annual payment and no upkeep.
Back to the OP's point. It's a sad day when OT Ballers buy huge houses, fancy cars and wine and dine like big shots and they can't even pay their bills.
The worst part is when a volunteer on the HOA board asks for payment on past dues (discreetly and privately,) these are the people who act like they've been disrespected. Trash personified.

I'd rather not be subdivision neighbors with 10-inch grass/weeds; broken down vehicle parked in street; trash cans by the road 24/7; etc.....but that's just me.

Generally not a problem in halfway decent neighborhoods with or without an HOA
in south Louisiana even in a halfway decent neighborhood you have trashy people..because well, its south Louisiana

Well..... regardless if you remember doing it or not, if you purchased a home in a subdivisionm /neighborhood that has a HOA, during closing you signed documents agreeing to follow the rules and restrictions of the HOA.... which may include a restriction on boats being park in the front of homes...
It's pretty simple really, moral of the story is don't buy a home in a subdivision that has an HOA if you have a problem with HOA's.....
