Point being, a HOA is absolutely necessary in order to keep the neighborhood up.
Only if you have shitty neighbors. My parents neighborhood is run by a neighborhood association. Everything is by volunteer work. They eventually closed the neighborhood pool because so many individual houses had their own, but when it was open it had a "membership area" and you bought a really reasonable membership to the pool. People sign up to mow common areas, attend meetings to deal with any other issues, etc.
HOAs are all fine and well until you get some peckerwood on the board that thinks it's his stepping stone for another elected government position and starts banning shite left and right. Or threatening legal action if your blinds are eggshell white.

HOA dues are a well worth expense
I agree.
If one doesn't want to pay them, then they can choose not to buy a home in an HOA area.
Your home is usually your greatest investment. Protect it. If Dequwan "who gives a frick about my lawn" moves in next door, then you have an entity that can legally force him to shape up or ship out.
