HOAs are well intentioned and probably necessary the issue is busy bodies that have nothing else to do to fill their time except police the neighborhood like their lives depend upon it and pry in others's business

Unfortunately due to the time requirement of HOA involvement it lends itself to these types of people being in leadership

No longer live in a HOA neighborhood and prefer it that way.

HOAs are to aid in protecting your property values. HOAsgenerally speaking, are here to protect the property values of the sundivision from homeowners like you!

I love it when people can't think for themselves and need someone else's approval to feel satisfaction. The ultimate followers in life.

They're useful in some ways. Keeping trailers out of the neighborhood and keeping people from turning their yards into a scrap yard.

The problem is that some of the presidents of these HOA's are people that otherwise have no authority in life and go on power trips. Only management types and business owners should be allowed to serve that role.

Another issue is that they can put a lien on your property and foreclose for not paying dues.
This is the most asinine shite I've ever heard.
It's wide open for abuse.
Our HOA is great. Yearly dues of $25 help pay for the lights.

Sorry but I'll never understand owning land/homes that some HOA or government agency tells you what you can or cannot do with your own land. If I want to build a shed or dig a pond... I'm just gonna do it. If a animal is getting in my trash I'm gonna blast it and dont need snowflakes next door to call the police with tears in their eyes.

As for neighbors being shitty just make sure they are far enough away that you cant see or hear them.

Of course 80% of the OT never had or never will live in a neighborhood with an HOA

In reality, they probably mostly do live there and they pay the bill like they're supposed to

My HOA does not really overstep and they handle some maintenance in the neighborhood. I don't see how this would get handled without one.

My bet is that just about every development in the past 10-15 years has some level of HOA

HOA dues are stupid

I pay $300/ year and I get access to a great saltwater pool, maintained pavilion and green space and illuminated street lamps in the neighborhood

That's a fricking steal

ETA: They also make sure trash take care of their property

Sorry, not going to pay dues so that other people can tell me what to do on my own property.

Great, then don't move into a subdivision with an HOA.

Some of you fail at basic logic and reading comprehension.

I love my HOA. It is run by the developers company. Gated neighborhood. When there are issues with the gate they fix it. When major maintenance is done everyone is notified. I don't have to touch the grass. The lawn and tree maintenance is taken care of.

I never want to be on a board again.
You have old people that are retired calling you every five minutes when someone farts.
I was told hey it only takes two hours a month. Bull!!!
You have to have meetings on business, notify people of meetings, get people to organize stuff or 9 out of 10 do it yourself, have to make sure paperwork is filed, have to make sure your financial books are in order, and make sure services are setup or done (green spaces are cut, if have gates etc that need to be repaired set that up, and if have security make sure actually done).

It is easier to turn it over to a company that manages these services and gets paid for doing that.

Then the calls from the busy body old people never stop. Some complaints are valid, while others are a bunch of bull hockey.

I refuse to pay my HOA dues. We paid them faithfully for years and then they decided to do away with nearly every perk we got out of it but kept the dues exactly the same. The money is being spent on ridiculous things like renting out Christmas lights when they could buy some and have them for years, plus they pay someone an arm and a leg to put them on 2 trees and along a fence. Someone in the neighborhood could volunteer to do that and if no one wants to then none of us wants the damn lights. I refuse to pay. They can put a lien on the house when I sell. I really don't give a frick at this point. They are robbing all of us.

We pay $420 a year (well, I don't anymore) and we have no gate, no pool, no clubhouse, nothing. They have a swingset. That is it. We are paying $420 a year to have someone mow the green areas.

I hope you don't get a lien filed against you for that

Generally speaking HOA's are a waste of money.

Why let someone else tell you what you can and can't do with your property?
How would the neighborhood collect for common area maintenance, landscaping, pool and clubhouse costs, repairs, etc? Point being, a HOA is absolutely necessary in order to keep the neighborhood up. There are definitely some a-hole HOA board members no doubt but I'd rather have a HOA than not.

My association fee is $420 A MONTH. We have 1 small pool thats only open 3 months of the year. The association decides to change something and we are all required to be up to code. They required us to get new skylights, new fences and new poly pipes, very costly upgrades. Our property values have dropped because no one wants to buy in and have to pay the association fees.
