I just don't see why restaurants won't pay their employees a respectable hourly wage and throw out tipping all together. From all the place i've traveled, and it's been a bunch, US the the only country where servers and bartenders money is based on tips.

This! I love eating at restaurants in Europe. It's a relaxing time. The service isn't rushed. The servers don't constantly check to see if they can take something away from your table. You spend time talking and laughing with friends instead of stuffing your face. And at the end the price is the price.

I'd press charges.

It wasn't fed min wage. Are you sure it is now?

That would make sense with places like Seattle having a higher cost of living. I only made a bit over $2/hr when I worked in the business...way below min wage at the time. All were basically depending on tips for their wages. Hope it's changed since then.

It was most likely not her fault, but the kitchens.

Or a combination after she rang it up wrong to begin with and thus they decided to frick it up for her from there.

I'm guessing it's a prepaid visa.

If wage plus tips does not equal fed min wage for a shift, owner has to pay the difference to employee

So I was just did a search to see if D'Jais added an automatic gratuity to the bill for large parties and I came across this review on Yelp. Not sure if this is the same party (says party of 7 not 8), but it was dated the same day as the receipt so take it FWIW. (I never did find any other confirmation that the management adds automatic tips to bills for large groups.)

(preface: My party is 'brown') So it was a slow monday afternoon (20% occupied) and our party of 7 was sat at 2 tables for some reason. after an hour of having placed our order and reminding the staff, our food came out, 1 sandwich even cold. appetizers came after the meal. Horrible customer experience. maybe we just had the wrong waitress or skin color. luckily she included the 18% gratuity so I didn't have to figure out how much to [not] tip.

Also, another (more positive) Yelp review posted this pic of a "typical patron" :

If true, that's on my list of things that bumps you down to 5-10%. Last month, I had a waitress argue with me when I sent back the appetizer because she brought it with the entrees. Told me I should have specified that I wanted it before the meal. One of the only times I've stiffed a server.

They made it a point to not tip the kitchen then as well.

She is an employee of this establishment, they came as patrons for food only. The establishment took 1 hour to deliver that food. She may not have had a part, she may have had a part, either way the overall experience was shitty, so why tip her like it wasn't.
