re: "Marines find culture of hazing, abuse at boot camp after recruit's death"

I had a couple of recruits try to off themselves when I was in bootcamp (2000). What I remember is them telling us if we were going to slit our wrist to go along the vein and not across it, hahaha. The military especially the Marines isn't for everybody. Sad that he killed himself but he was just getting smoked. It was done to me more times than I can remember.

Six days later, he told his drill instructors that he wanted to kill himself but later changed his mind, according to Marine officials.
Over the next 24 hours, Siddiqui was monitored before being interviewed and examined by military medical personnel. First, he first spoke with someone from Parris Island's Recruiter Liaison Service, which falls under Marine Corps Recruiting Command. Next, he was examined by a psychologist at the facility's mental health unit, which falls under the Navy Bureau of Medicine and Surgery.
After those examinations, it was recommended that Siddiqui “return to training,” the official said.
That's odd. Back in the day, the old saw was "the quickest way out of here is to graduate" but the one exception was for a suicide threat.
The Corps wanted no part of that shite so your arse was gone within 24 hours, no questions asked.

Marines are really falling hard at boot camp these days.

None of these frickers watch Full Metal Jacket?
I mean they are at the island in the damned movie? Or the story says so? I dont know if the Marines would have let that movie be shot on their facilities.
Having a marine or recruit with voiced and written suicidal ideation? Guy should be gone! You aren't "breaking" him of that. Maybe you can? Or maybe he kills himself and you make the Marine Corps look bad? Or maybe a guy takes an opportunity to go batshit with live ammo? Again........?
My dad was forced to drag his bunk up and down stairs while sick (sunburned) because his bed was made poorly. I believe he was also docked pay for damaging "military property or assets". By damaging himself with a drunken sunburn.
ETA. this was the Army I the late 60's. In a Japanese hospital. My dad made it through the Vietnam war only having been exposed to "shots" of Sake.

We were called the "Dirt Platoon" because we were always getting "Bent" in the dirt. Sometimes 2-3 times a day.

Dear Ma and Pa:
I am well. Hope you are. Tell Brother Walt and Brother Elmer the Marine Corps beats working for old man Minch by a mile. Tell them to join up quick before all of the places are filled.
I was restless at first because you get to stay in bed till nearly 6 a.m. But I am getting used to it, so I like to sleep late.
Tell Walt and Elmer all you do before breakfast is smooth your cot, and shine some things. No hogs to slop, feed to pitch, mash to mix, wood to split, fire to lay. Practically nothing.
Men got to shave but it is not so bad, there’s warm water. Breakfast is strong on trimmings like fruit juice, cereal, eggs, bacon, etc., but kind of weak on chops, potatoes, ham, steak, fried eggplant, pie and other regular food, but tell Walt and Elmer you can always sit by the two city boys that live on coffee. Their food, plus yours, holds you until noon when you get fed again. It’s no wonder these city boys can’t walk much.
We go on “route marches,” which the platoon sergeant says are long walks to harden us. If he thinks so, it’s not my place to tell him different. A “route march” is about as far as to our mailbox at home. Then the city guys get sore feet and we all ride back in trucks.
The sergeant is like a school teacher. He nags a lot. The Captain is like the school board. Majors and colonels just ride around and frown. They don’t bother you none.
This next will kill Walt and Elmer with laughing. I keep getting medals for shooting. I don’t know why. The bulls-eye is near as big as a chipmunk head and don’t move, and it ain’t shooting at you like the Higgett boys at home. All you got to do is lie there all comfortable and hit it. You don’t even load your own cartridges. They come in boxes.
Then we have what they call hand-to-hand combat training. You get to wrestle with them city boys. I have to be real careful though, they break real easy. It ain’t like fighting with that ole bull at home. I’m about the best they got in this except for that Tug Jordan from over in Silver Lake . I only beat him once. He joined up the same time as me, but I’m only 5’6? and 130 pounds and he’s 6’8? and near 300 pounds dry.
Be sure to tell Walt and Elmer to hurry and join before other fellers get onto this setup and come stampeding in.
Your loving daughter,
Alice

What kind of Marine can't swim!?
kind? the kind that were recruited. lots of blacks can't swim.
what kind of DI does not know that about his men?
lets guess. white DI. drowned black people.
wanna bet?

This is what happens when politicians, reporters, and Mom's of America are allowed to have a say in things they have no business talking about. I went to boot camp in 2013, I had absolutely no fricking problem in there. I was honestly expecting it to be worse than it was. It was easy, all you've got to do is what the drill instructors tell you to do, when they tell you to do it, and how they tell you to do it. Me coming from a family that had parents that commanded respect from their children, I had absolutely no issues with it. The recruits from the north didn't have that kinda respect driven into them so they had the most trouble.
Honestly, I was kind of disappointed with how easy it was. I felt like I wasn't getting a true boot camp. I rarely saw a DI put his hands on a recruit when the recruit was fricked up. Like maybe 3 times tops.

You just had to make it about race huh pussy? Maybe the guy was just a drunk a-hole just like the story said. I spent 15 years in the Corps and it's the least racist place in this country hands down.

Out of curiosity, how many people are actually suicidal in boot camp? I know I wouldn't want to serve next to a guy that had a death wish. It seems like they would get him out of there with the quickness to avoid any problems

name calling does not change the facts.
I don't know the answer. I posed the question.

True dat. Marines are 100% assholes but nearly 0% racist assholes.

I know I have a "that's wacist" GIF around here somewhere...
If you can't swim, why the hell would you join the marines...?
If you can't ruck with 40 pounds why would you join the military at all?
If you can't tolerate tedious BS, why would you join the AF?

Yes you do. It was in the post you quoted but conveniently left out the part about him being drunk. You just felt like trolling. Or at least I hope you were trolling because otherwise you are legitimately retarded.

They used to get them out...now it's about getting them help, going to 4 suicide prevention coomba-ya meetings, taking 3 CBT on it, and having to listen to it at 12 commanders calls per year.
They bosses have to know, you can't save every precious snowflake...they need to be ushered out.

None that I can recall from my platoon at least. We had a guy who had an extreme nervous breakdown the night before we met our actual drill instructors but I don't think a recruit actually tried to kill himself.
You've gotta be severely fricked in the head to try that at boot camp. They try to make you quit but they don't try to make you kill yourself.
