I'd slow the roll about today's Marines and other military personnel being soft. They've been doing the deed in various shitholes around the world for about 15 years now. Whatever their basic training was like, they've earned their stripes where it counted.
This is my point. People bitch about standards being low.. but they're infantry, not doctors.

I agree with this 100%
I went through MCRD 89 and it was about the hardest thing I ever had to do but I have nothing but respect for later Marines and don't really care if boot camp has different obstacles or they changed this or that
I have no doubt those dress blues feel the same when you wear them regardless of when you earned them.
I still remember to this day a young man maybe 15 shaking my hand out of the blue and telling me "thank you for your service"
Its something you keep and a many reason why I always make it a point to do the same, no matter what branch

The great majority of those guys are out of the service or promoted up into non-front line roles at this point, at least in the infantry. They've been down-sizing a lot, though, so they can be pretty tough and selective.
I wonder if this is a problem more specific to the Navy. Those sailors who were captured by Iran also acted like a bunch of candy asses.

That still does not mean that the efficiency and mentality of our military is somehow weaker. Folks probably were saying the same thing 15 years ago on Sept 10th, saying all the Desert Storm guys are not front-line, and the new ones are soft. It's the same thing in every generation. We got a laugh at the Navy guys, but I wouldn't doubt some tears weren't shed in the 50's and 60's in a similar scenario.
Only difference is that diplomacy is more prevalent since there are so many cameras and news feeds. Can't go peeing on corpses or anything anymore.....

Well, I'll say this: I am still pretty young, though I got out in 2012. The deterioration in competence and quality was visible over the course of my term, and I wasn't even in all that crazy long. The deterioration in quality NCOs, especially, was notable. I have read and heard morale has tanked. Screwing with cohesion hasn't helped at all, but resource issues and lack of purpose and leadership seem to be the biggest culprits.
Regarding Desert Storm, specifically, such a small fraction of the military was actually involved in the 72 hours of fighting that it's hard to argue that there was a real, permanent influence in the ranks (McMaster excepted, though he really earned his chops the second time around in Iraq). Everyone fought in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Well, my unit had an incident not too dissimilar from this that hit international news as well. Just from my own experience and observations, it's usually the more screwed up units and soldiers that pull stunts like that. The Mahmudiyah guys, for instance, were total PoS's even before they did crap like that.

That's odd. Back in the day, the old saw was "the quickest way out of here is to graduate" but the one exception was for a suicide threat.
The Corps wanted no part of that shite so your arse was gone within 24 hours, no questions asked.
Concur, same with Navy....you want to see Division lose their minds, let them get wind of a suicide threat. Esp deployed, out on the 1st Cod.

Ah, just what we need, marines on the front line that pull out due to a sore knee or shin splint.

I call bullshite on all of this. I graduated 3rd Batt. Parris Island in '86. Only 50% of my platoon made it. All else went home doing the sea bag drag. Frick the non hackers. But dude did that to himself.
Can't wait for the all girl Marine Corps that Ashe has coming. I'm sure our enemies applaud and welcome them.

We had a couple recruits put on suicide watch in my bc platoon. They would add a fire watch at night who's job was to make sure the recruit didn't kill himself. The suicide recruits were always huge vaginas. This was San Diego in 2003.

Guy in my boot platoon got his head knocked into the wall in the rain room. DI had shoved him. Little bitch went and told some navy slut during a dental visit. She reported Sgt. Duran and got him fired. He was our coolest green belt. We were all pisssed. The little fricker finished, but none of us liked him. We all wanted to beat him every day. Never happened though. Dude probably wanted to kill himself.

Went through boot camp in 2011... I get out of the Marine Corps here in a few months. It's a joke honestly.
The sense of pride and camaraderie is all gone. I am under the solid belief that everyone always thinks they had it harder than the guy after them. In this case it's true. To an extent... The only thing I think we do right is stuff like the Sailor who didn't stand for the flag and may just get away with it... That would never fly.
If you guys have any specific questions I'll field them.

Do you drive a Ford Mustang or a 4x4? Where on your body is your USMC tattoo?
