That's not hazing.

Not even close to hazing. I was Army, but similar shite was called getting smoked when I was in Basic in 92. Then again, that's all illegal now. You couldn't drop anyone for more than 10 pushups by the time I retired in 2012.

ETA- Guess having to dig my E7 rank out of my shoulder blades the day I got promoted would be considered hazing now.

Well, you'd be right.

When he appeared unresponsive, the drill instructor "verbally ordered" Siddiqui to get back to his feet before "forcefully slapping" him in the face

Oh, so he could still run.

I'm sorry, but if you're in boot camp, and have suicidal statements, I think it should pretty much be cut and dry discharge (medical). Apparently something was going on before you stepped foot on base/Fort/Island and that needs to be worked out on your own.

This is how it works in the air force, if im not mistaken. When I went through we had a kid in week one that they found tying his shoelaces together in the back of the dorm... Never saw him again after that day

So would anyone argue that the Marines are less capable now than they were 20 years ago?

We had one say that he wanted to kill himself. RDC #1 told him there were railroad tracks nearby and to jump the fence, stand on them, and wait. RDC #2 told him to make sure he cut with the grain and not against it.

Is it insensitive of me to say I'd rather my Marines be ruthless BAMFs than inclusive and nice?

Son, we live in a world that has walls, and those walls have to be guarded by men with guns. Who's gonna do it? You? You, GetCocky11? I have a greater responsibility than you could possibly fathom. You weep for Saddiqui, and you curse the Marines. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know. That Saddiqui's death, while tragic, probably saved lives. And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, saves lives. You don't want the truth because deep down in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me on that wall, you need me on that wall. We use words like honor, code, loyalty. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. You use them as a punchline. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said thank you, and went on your way, Otherwise, I suggest you pick up a weapon, and stand a post. Either way, I don't give a damn what you think you are entitled to.

Or marine life was?

My DI squeezed the back of my neck once. He actually mistakened me for a different recruit.

As much as I hate to admit it, yes.

I feel like this administration made it a mission to take what has historically been regarding as America's most rigorous military branch (PSA I said branch. I know we have a lot of Delta DEVGRU SEAL/EOD qualified Rangers that post here) and make them as vanilla as possible to initiate change within the other branches of service.

I was in from 2006-2014 and saw a dramatic change from the quality of recruits that I went to bootcamp with to the ones who started coming in around 2011 or so. It sucks to admit, but the Marine Corps is rapidly becoming the same as the Army, Navy, Air Force, & Coast Guard.

All hazing is stupid.

No.

But, (and not speaking about this case, which is more about someone who seems to have regretted enlisting and had mental problems)...

Hazing becomes stupid in the wrong hands. You have people who have the common sense to know how to apply it and you have people who will immediately abuse any power given to them.

all Marines can swim, those were recruits and would not become Marines if they don't pass swim qualification
