Its a blast drink till you drop while trying to chase chickens. We will most likely be there this year again.

re: Mamou Mardi Gras
It's a good time. We checked it out a few years back. We ended up in a trailer with the biggest bunch of racists I have ever met, but besides that it was great. Drunken guys on horses chasing chickens and doing back flips off the horses in to roadside ditches while a band on a trailer plays La danse de Mardi Gras over and over again.

How many parades does Mamou have?

parades?

mamou is a horse trail ride basically. you go from house to house and chase chickens or receive something else for the gumbo at the end of the ride.

I've been once. I liked it as much as New Orleans. It's completely different though so one can't really compare the two.

Courir de Mardi Gras is an experience like no other. I've never been to one in Mamou, but I've gone to Church Point and Tee Mamou. I love the one in Tee Mamou.

Acadian ambulance keeps a helicopter on standby just on the outskirts of town if that's any indicator of how rowdy it gets

re: Mamou Mardi Gras
My dad and his family are from St. Landry and Evangeline parishes, so we went to the parades in Eunice and Mamou back in the day. To put it mildly, they are very 'cajun' but a freaking blast. The parade itself is more like a country parade with the homemade floats and lots of horses crapping all over the road. lol But the people there are very cool, and if you like to eat and drink, well they are then the coolest. Definitely go and enjoy yourself, just don't expect it to be anything like the one in New Orleans.

Now if you ever want to go to a fun 'family' style Mardi Gras try the one over in Mobile, AL. It is sponsored by Moonpie. We came home with an ice chest full of moonpies. Ate on those things for six months.

I grew up going to New Orleans for parades but from what I hear, it is nothing like that. What can I expect in Mamou?

honestly, there is no comparison at all...not even the same event, in my mind...

like the cajun culture in general, the mamou event is totally casual and not the slightest bit formal...just expect a damn big drunken gathering of cajuns having fun and clowning...

just let those around you know you haven't experienced it before and go with the flow...

I went to LSUE for a year, went to the Mamou Mardi Gras. I think it should almost be a bucket list type thing for a Louisianian. Everything described in this thread is pretty accurate

We encountered belligerent racists the year we went. It was uncalled for. New Orleans was a much better and more open minded experience.

And the bars make enough profit THAT weekend to pay their expenses the remainder.

I thought the whites and blacks have separate events. Whites are on one end of town and the blacks on the other.

You're thinking of the Breaux Bridge crawfish festival
