You post here..your brain has to be a wee bit damaged to hang around here for extended periods of time.

I see the applied logic, but that is a cop out. So, start early to REDUCE the chance of CTE......jeez.

What are you talking about. If safety is your concern, I'd suggest that teaching kids the proper way of tackling and lowering their should is safest at the young ages.

I began in 8th grade and picked up "you don't tackle what you can't see" very quick.....most of us did as our coaches were excellent.

Ok. I began at 7 years old and I remember vividly the fear that was placed in the kids about proper technique. And, after my playing days, I remember watching family play at age 12 or so and recognizing how a kid that age can hit with serious force.

The risk to a kid prior to age 10 is very, very low. In fact, I think the poster who said the kid is more likely to hurt himself at home running in socks is literally correct.

As long as your wife is willing to have birth by cesarean, you can have a football helmet fitted to the fetus prior to birth.

Right.. Because there is no middle ground between tackle football and video games.

That helps with concussions and other head and neck injuries, but research suggests that CTE can be caused by small repetitive hits as well.

Repetitive minor hits by linemen are a big focus.

Everything is relative. I'd suggest the damage being done at ages 6-12 is minuscule to the damage being done from 13 on up. Granted, I'm making that suggestion based on no real data and just anecdotal evidence. But, I'd be very surprised if stopping the smallest players who hit with the least force would make a big difference.

And, as a parent, I'd be a lot more concerned watching my kid play football at age 13 for the first time and I would at watching my kid play football for 7 years between the ages of 6 and 12. I honestly believe that the risk of injury is greater in the former case than the latter.

My older brothers all played contact football from age 7 through at least high school. 2 of them even played college football. I played from age 10 through high school. We are all successful in our fields. Don't be a pussy. Let your kid play if he wants to.

Thats an early age for full contact. At that age its about fundamentals, which can be learned without full contact.

What fundamentals would those be? The fundamentals I know about are blocking and tackling. Not sure how you can teach those without full contact.

but you do hit on something with the idea of fundamentals. Actually, the problem we're seeing today in football is not due to kids playing too early. The problem is they're not being taught proper fundamentals. You should never have to use your head to tackle, block, or do anything in football. But we see so many players leading with their head and using it as a weapon. They're doing this because they're not taught any different. Teach them good fundamentals starting at a young age. That way they start forming good habits instead of bad ones, thus lessening the chance they'll suffer head injuries.

Good luck on him making a team at 13 with no previous experience.

Coaches love that.

Yeah cause every non-little leaguer is smoking dope and gang banging! Dumbass, it's called parenting!

Yeah, LL football sucks here also, coaches think they're Bill Belichek or something! win at all cost, recruiting, its all about the coaches not the kids and teaching the game!

I'm laughing at all the guys calling this dude a pussy when he played offensive line for LSU

Maybe he's not a moron like the rest of you and actually cares about the well being and future of his kids

We could end all the head injuries in football if we would just go back to soft leather helmets. The first season or so would be a bloodbath with multiple on-field deaths, etc. but they would pick up on it fairly quickly after that.

ETA: Powerman, just because you let your kid play football means you don't love him or care about his well-being? shite... He's going to be sad when he hears that.

I've already got my boy kicking pretty good. At 9 he makes it constantly from 75 feet. That's good enough for an extra point, though in 9-11 I think it's 2 points for a kick. Next year he'll go out. He wants to be a receiver, but I think maybe he should wait a bit for that.

My boy started tackle at 7. They teach how to tackle without getting concussed so by the time they reach middle school it will be second nature to them.
