I'm not saying the girl intended any harm but good judgement is lacking here. Would you be upset if that had been your seven year old daughter? I'd think so.
you're coming off as an insufferable prick. If anything, this is a case of familiarity breeding contempt. Sitter probably took the kid out in the canoe numerous times. This time it went bad. shite happens. Its not bad judgement, carelessness, or something sinister (unless it is). Its a shite happens moment.
lesson learned and good job keeping the toddler safe.
OF course I reserve the right to retract this statement if the girl went canoeing against the parent's instructions

I was actually out there this morning with the search and rescue efforts. I was in one of about 20 kayaks that were out there.
So from their pond/lake there is a little canal on the north side that lets water flow in and out of the pond towards Bayou Tortue. The problem is that the entire area that you see that is trees to the north is about 4 feet of water. It is very thick but navigable with a kayak/canoe.
There was also zero current so they didn't get sucked down the bayou. They simply went for a paddle down the canal in the swamp area. What is believed to have happened was they went and got into Bayou Tortue. They went east too far so when attempting to go back couldn't remember what canal they were supposed to take back and got turned around. They made their way north on the bayou that runs north to the east of Coulee Crow on google maps. From there they found higher ground which led them to one of the old oil well pad

First, I want to tell you that it sounds like your granddaughter kept a level head and kept them safe. Good girl and well done.
Second, I want to warn you that you won't win any battles posting on this site. it will only make you angry and frustrated.
Go give your granddaughter a big hug and get a peaceful night's sleep.

You should be proud of your granddaughter; there are adults on this board criticizing her actions that more than likely would have gotten themselves and the girl drowned; or worse.
In my opinion her wits saved two lives.
ETA as an avid kayaker; I can say how easy it is to lose your bearings on the water.
Also forgive any typos etc. I lost my readers

She stayed positive for the girl through a night of hell. At light she climbed a tree to get her bearings on what direction to go. She got them out safely.
glad to hear, this is really all that matters now.

Your granddaughter survived a night in the swamp with zero preparation or equipment and took care of a little kid and kept her safe while doing it. You should be proud. So should your granddaughter.
Anybody can get turned around in the swamp or marsh. Anyone who doesn't get that hasn't spent enough time there. shite can go real wrong real fast.
Course, this is the o-t so...
Go post this over on the OB and you'll get a more pleasant response and some pointers for the next time it happens.

Sounds like she did an incredible job in a bad situation. Don't pay attention to the negative idiots on here. They are way too quick to jump to conclusions, trying to show that they are smarter than anyone else. This place can be great, but it can also be a cesspool of low self esteem. And for sure don't venture over to the rant.

I thought the mud covering was brilliant. Kudos to your granddaughter.

Really glad they were found safe. I drive down Lake Martin road everyday. I would not make spending a night out there.

Sounds like she did a hell of a job. Probably watches those survival shows on the discovery channel and was able to put it into practice. Since it was a happy ending give her her own show.
