Because she was going out in the water on a boat on what she probably thought would be a 20 minute canoe trip around a small lake and didn't want to risk it getting wet.
But then she wouldn't be able to snapchat it

There's a little T-junction on 353 dead center and just off the map I posted bottom of last page. It's the other side of the wishbone of the waterway that goes under the bridge also linked previous page. It looks like a there's a sand-bank put in there near a cluster of houses VERY close to Lake Martin itself. My money is on that's where they ditched the canoe and started walking.

I met that babysitter at the Boiling Bash last year. She was a volunteer and she delivered shrimp and catfish to our table. Adorable, sweet gal. Smart. Now she can add swamp survival skills to her resume. Glad this ended well.

i'm sure she's relieved but, that had to be one long arse walk knowing what was waiting for you at the end.

That doesn't trump common sense though when a seven year-old is involved in a canoe ride in flood waters.

They took the canoe out at 5:15 or so on what they thought was a 2 acre lake. If the parents weren't coming home until later, you aren't getting the search on until nighttime.

They took a canoe out into a lake. Why did they end up in the swamp? and for whatever dumb reason they went into the wooded section, why'd you go so far in you got away from the open lake? Did they lose the paddle? This part doesn't make sense to me. It's an open lake. How did you get lost?

I think it's an easy assumption to think that a 21 year old girl would take her phone with her.

As I said on page one. I'd bet this is the family sitter that's been watching this kid for a few years. All summer they've taken the canoe out with permission from the parents...it's a pond...not Lake Pontchartrain. Parents forget to tell the babysitter the lake is too high to canoe...and they just ride the current out into the swamp.

She probably wasn't aware of the water being too high. It's not like Lafayette got flooded by Harvey

If this whole thing was truly innocent and an accident that snowballed... I think that if babysitter somehow managed to bottle up the panic and anxiety for the duration to the extent that the little girl felt fairly safe given the situation - THAT would be deserving of some respect right there.

I just get the feeling the parents aren't going to be very rational about the whole thing.

You just made my point about common sense. I'm not saying the girl intended any harm but good judgement is lacking here. Would you be upset if that had been your seven year old daughter? I'd think so.

I'd be upset if I told them not to go out in the canoe and they did. Otherwise, I'd be glad she kept my daughter safe.

They were sitting in an old oil well site by Lake Martin, covered in mud, in order to protect themselves from mosquitos after going missing Monday evening. The pair was in good health, and they're being checked out at the hospital. The 7-year-old was extremely happy to be found and was seen laughing and in good spirits following the rescue.

Sounds like the babysitter knew what she was doing.

The sitter is originally from California. They likely went into the woods to look around because of the high water and lost their bearings as the sun got low in the sky. Totally innocent mistake with potentially serious consequences. They seem to have done ok. Bet neither one ever forgets the experience.

This.

To be sucked into a bayou with a swift flooded current, she did well to keep the canoe from rolling over, avoiding felled trees and God knows what else. Letting the current take them until she had any kind of control.

What a nightmare and thank God they are safe.

Finally a happy ending! So fortunate for them all! The babysitter did a damn fine job keeping the two of them alive.

Most kids would want to take a kanoe ride. Cut the girl some slack. The efforts she made to keep them alive, including covering them in mud to avoid mosquitoes, shows she has a head on her shoulders.
