If you aren't in recovery your opinion carries little if any weight. This isn't targeted specifically at you. You were just the last.

I know, only alcoholics can really empathize with other alcoholics, straight from the big book. But humor me for a moment since this guy is asking advice for how to help his friend.
Just don't let him give up trying because AA didn't work. Not all, but some twelve steppers will tell him he didn't try hard enough or buy into it enough and there's no sobriety without Bill Wilsons advice. There's other avenues to go down to get where he wants to be.

You keep saying this but has anyone in here said AA is the only way for people to get help?

Nope, not a single person. Sorry i keep harping on it, i just think it's a good thing to keep in mind for someone trying to get sober.

IMO people should try ever option they can find until they find one that works, and that includes AA. Also IMO they need to want to stop and I think even more importantly they need a reason to stop. Once they have the will and a reason the rest is easy!

Would you agree to help manage your friend's calories if he were getting too fat? Tell him to stop eating mid-meal when you were at a restaurant? Of course not. You'd tell him to take care of his own fricking business.

Why not? People make a living telling others how to eat. Why would it be so bad to make suggestions to friends? Let's say you recently lost 30lbs and your friend asks you for help. Why is it ridiculous to help that person to coach that person?

I also see no diff in your doctor saying you have high cholesterol and tells you to stop eating certain foods. Whether you actually do it or not determines if that person really wants help.

I never saw where his buddy tried AA. Or anything else. My bad. And I'm not shitting on non-twelve step programs. But every person that has posted in this thread and is sober did it with AA. So maybe start there.

Try some controlled drinking or try to drink and stop abruptly. Try it more than once. It will not take long for you to decide , if you are honest with yourself.

AA has worked for me for 15 years now. No, it is not the only way, but it does works if you work it. I hope the OP's friend finds the way. If he prays and asks for help, it will come. Good luck.

He can get over drinking if he is desperate enough, most alcoholics, including myself have to be pretty badly mangled before accepting Spiritual help. I'll be glad to put him in touch with the right people in his area, if you want my email address let me know.

As I said in an earlier post
Some of us don't have the ability to be honest. If you can't u will not get sober.

There's a difference in sobriety and not drinking or just being dry as we call it. I know I was for a year before I got sober.

Paw paw u are correct been there an done that

Were you "cured" before your slip? Didn't need the program anymore? Honest questions if you don't mind sharing.
