tex mex as a culinary discipline happened in Houston,, we had the $$ , the customers, multiple restaurants to make it become big time

Having the $$ to buy something does not equal creating it. Houston, Austin and Dallas all had a hand in popularizing texmex with the Anglos. But San Antonio is the birthplace and gave it to the rest of Texas.

great recs

and I said it earlier, but houston is a more diverse and balanced culinary destination. think NOLA has better restaurants at the very top, though...not gonna argue it, but I don't think that would put it over the top overall.

there is no part/aspect of texas that is "southern"

Maybe northeast TX, like around Tyler and Longview. Certainly not Houston.

Culinary wise, Houston is more diverse. More options for food. You can have burgers, bbq, Mexican, Italian, Asian, seafood and much more.

Based on # of options for each food type and quality Houston is pretty hard to beat

# of options per capita would be a better comparative metric, and would probably put Houston behind some smaller cities with strong culinary scenes

Far east Texas is very southern. Houston, not so much.

Atlanta is easily the biggest carpetbagger metro in the south. Alpharetta, Norcross, down to Midtown don't have any fricking southerners left that aren't transplants themselves. It's a mixture of midwesterners, northeasterners, people from MS,AL,TN,SC,NC,FL...and Mid-Atlantic fricks. Not to mention the Hondurans, Salvadorans and Mexicans, in increasing numbers. Atlanta hasn't been a southern town since the late 1980's.

Houston is the international city of the south, probably by a good margin. But 30-40 years ago you could call Houston a southern town and nobody would've disagreed. Things have changed, for the better and for the worst.

Houston is in the south whether people want to believe it or not. Kinda weird how folks want to deny it as if being in the south is some great honor that can only be bestowed by the cultural gatekeepers of the OT.

Accepting that Houston is in the south, it is no surprise that the region's biggest, most diverse, most international, and most cosmopolitan city would have the best food. No, it won't beat New Orleans on Louisiana food ... But Houston has just about every kind of food imaginable because it is a world class city.
