Completely false.
My wife and I love traveling to New Orleans. We like taking the streetcar and photographing the marvelous antebellum homes. We enjoy strolling through the Garden District and admiring the great architecture. We enjoy a classic jazz brunch, cafe au lait, and a bloody mary. We enjoy strolling through Audubon Park and the beauty of Loyola University as the streetcar passes on by. We enjoy having a Pimm's Cup at The Columns. We enjoy relaxing in a courtyard in the French Quarter while sipping a sazerac. We enjoy browsing through the art galleries on Royal. We enjoy a drink and listening to some fine jazz in the Carousel Bar. We enjoy making free concerts at Tipitina's. We enjoy the many wonderful restaurants and bars throughout the city.
"Tits and beer" and Bourbon street are never on our list.

Mardi Gras?
Jazz and funk music?
Famous festivals - Jazz fest, voodoo fest?
Incredible, unique architecture?
Look man, I don't have a dog in the fight, but you are vastly underestimating New Orleans. It's an international tourist destination.

As someone who has lived in the South his whole life, very few people outside of NO care about NO except for Mardi Gras. I'm not saying they don't have other cool, unique events or experiences, I'm just saying it doesn't have a good reputation as a "nice city" so most people don't really want to go there unless it's to party and get drunk.
Sure, you can walk around and look at the unique architecture, all while keeping an eye on your wife an kids to make sure they aren't assaulted or robbed by one of the locals. That's how people outside of Louisiana see New Orleans. People only hear about how grimy and dangerous it is and that overshadows some of the unique and interesting aspects about the city. They have cool music and food, but the downside is you have to go to NO to experience it.

I've been very upfront and honest about the New Orleans crime situation in a previous thread. As a native of Detroit (and now live in Chicago), I know a horrible crime situation when I see one. New Orleans has a serious crime problem. We've never had an issue. That said, the things we enjoy doing generally puts us out of harms way.
We aren't going to New Orleans to get plastered off hand grenades and daiquiris on Bourbon. I'm well aware that a lot of people visit New Orleans just for that reason. It's like Vegas in the sense that it is a party destination.
To limit New Orleans to just a party destination is absolutely false though.

I don't know too many people who actually give a shite about cajun food, other than people from Louisiana. Only people in NO think their food is worth the hassle of having to interact with Louisiana/New Orleans locals. No one would go to NO if it weren't for tits and beer.
New Orleans food isn't cajun, which shows how little you know. Tell us more about how you and your fat family waddled around bourbon street and are fried seafood.

Holy fck batman!
I'm going to just be nice and say you are not very informed.
Educated tourist with lots of money come from all over the damn world to visit Nola. It's not all about bourbon street and mardi gras. Try to book a room on the weekend from February through June and again from October through December.
9 million people visited N.O. last year. Again, educated people that appreciate "GOOD" food, music, arts, you know culture, love Nola.
I'm happy to hear that Houston is beefing up it's dining scene. And I love reading that cities in Alabama and Georgia are stepping up their game too.

Maybe you're comfortable there because you come from a city where crime is commonplace. I didn't limit it to a party destination. In fact, I specifically mentioned other aspects of the city that may bring in tourists. But I did say that the majority of tourists go there to get drunk and party. Do you disagree with that? The same can't be said for other major cities viewed as tourist destinations (save for Las Vegas).
No one says, "let's go to New York, San Francisco, Nashville, Los Angeles, etc to get drink and see tits."

As a Yankee and outsider, I'm still casting my vote for New Orleans as the "culinary and cultural center of the south."
First, this isn't New Orleans' first rodeo. Houston has only been around since lunch. New Orleans has hundreds of years of history built into it. Unique architecture, unique food, unique music and a unique lifestyle that very few (if any) in the US can relate to.

I could give a frick how you classify gumbo and jumbalaya. I'm sorry your home (or the best known city in your home state) is a crime-ridden shithole.

Nashville? We do a shite ton of business in Nashville and it is most certainly a "get drunk and listen to country music on Broadway" destination.
Off the top of my head, Las Vegas, New Orleans, Nashville, Miami and Key West stand out as party destinations.
The only difference (with exception for Miami/Key West beach activities) is that New Orleans has a lot of history built into it and offers a lot more than the drinking and partying.

Yep. Gumbo and jambalaya. About as expected. LOL
Carry on as you have got it all figured out.

Yea that must be why it's an international tourist destination. Those two dishes and crime. Are the all the female tourists there to see tits too?

You think people go to Nashville for the same reasons they go to New Orleans? Are you retarded?
All you did was name party destinations. Which makes my point. NO is a party destination for people who want to get drunk and see tits.

They are there to show their tits to the men who are there to see them. Women have tits.

Do you really think Nashville isn't a party destination? People like to go get dolled up like Dolly Parton and party on Broadway and listen to country music.

If you took a list of the top 25 restaurants in NOLA did you know that none of them offer jambalaya or fried shite in their menu as a general rule?
And if you jump to the top 50 list I doubt more than 5 do.

You better learn the diffence. Since Nashvillians are apparently inept in creating their own restaurants, they sure seem to be borrowing a lot of New Orleans and Charleston restaurants (Cochon Butcher, St. Roch Market, Butcher and Bee, Husk, etc...)

Are those not traditional New Orleans foods? You should get in touch with the New Orleans Convention & Visitors Bureau. Tell them to update their Traditional New Orleans Food list.

As a current resident of Houston and former resident (born and raised) of New Orleans, it's so annoying that threads about Houston always devolve into a pissing match between the two cities. Both are great cities with much to offer, and both are uniquely Southern.
The blame falls on both sides for having to measure dicks based on their city of origin or current residence. It's so stupid. Everyone needs to get over themselves.
