I'm a well known TD Texas hater, Louisiana Native. And while I do not believe Houston is the cultural center of anything (Mexico Jr maybe), some of y'all haven't been to Houston if you honestly believe this isn't one of the best culinary cities in the country. there's no denying it

I have been and its solid. Better than New Orleans...no. Top ten nationwide though. Nola and NYC have the top two spots sown up for the foreseeable future.

Pei Wei isn't what I would call culinarylingus. Sorry, Houston. Bow to your Daddy's Dallas and Austin.

Houston has a very diverse international culture. This cannot be denied.

Culinary capital of the south:

New Orleans has 5 national James Beard award nominees, Best new Restaurant, Outstanding Bar Program Another Outstanding Bar Program, Outstanding Chef, and Outstanding Wine Program.

Total national nominees: 5

Houston Total national nominees: 0

New Orleans has three nominees for Best Chef South.

Houston has two nominees for Best Chef Southwest.

Houston has some great places to eat, but this is just silly.

People who don't come here often don't realize how many Asian people there are in Houston and how good the Asian food is. Vietnamese, Chinese, Korean, Indian. The Vietnamese food here is amazing because of how big the ethnic population is.
it's simple really, ask the asians, particularly the vietnamese in nola, where they travel for asian food, the answer is rhetorical.

it might be better to say that the top end places in nola are better, but houston is much more balanced.

This.

Organic Houston cuisine is oxymoronic as well.

Houston and Atlanta are tied for the most vanilla Southern metropolis.

There are 3 outstanding food cities in America...NYC, SF and Nola. The 4th is Houston. My wife and I go every year for a food trip. It's excellent and growing dynamically. It's not one of the big 3....yet.

I've eaten at every Nola restaurant (missing a couple new ones) and a ton of Houston places...almost all of offshore's list and many more.

You have to be in the South to be the culinary capital of it

I enjoy creole food but not enough to move to New Orleans. I'd have a hard time moving away to lose the Asian food alone. Offshore Angler has done a good job summarizing.

Using the same logic of some of these N.O. Homers:
Houston was not occupied during Civil War, therefore Houston is culturally superior.

It hurts bad to have been overtaken in the 60's by Houston, they still aren't over it.

Pretty un fair to compare Houston to New Orleans when there more people in Houston that than the entire state of Louisiana and you have to drive from Baton Rouge to Slidell to compare it geographically.

Finally, name one dish that originated in Harris County besides Mexican ..oh wait
