Why can't you just save the $500 and just keep it outside on side of the house?

Because my wife said so?

They lack common sense?

No way our trash cans are staying in the garage. It gets up to 115 this time of year. Can you imagine how bad that would make our garage smell? I don't care if you do use bag ties and hose out the cans....it will still smell. You really think a thin layer of plastic is gonna completely keep out the smells? Cmon

As mentioned it is in our HOA garbage cans are to be kept in garage. Just put in garbage bags and toss in large garbage can. Just don't miss trash day at end of week especially during hot months.

Used to be in garage, but I learned quick about the smell.

It now goes outside garage behind a little tree/shrub. Not hidden, but IDGAF. shite smells.

Trash can also busted a small hole in bottom, so some nasty shite leaks out on occasion. I can easily hose it off/rain wash it away outside. In garage, gross. WM won't bring me another since it's not "damaged".

Clean the can if it smells, bleach and a little laundry detergent takes care of it,

No doubt

No way the wife and I have a dispute about what happens on the outside of the house.

If that happens, she just inherited outside maintenence. I don't care where she keeps the washing detergent.

Garage along with the recycling can. But have an oversized garage and there is plenty of room. Also I'm not allowed to keep it outside in view and would be a huge pain to get it to the back of the house. I've never had an issue with smells.

Only situation where it would make more sense to keep in there. I've seen big bear boxes for trash cans before in areas where there are bears as well.
