And that's ok. Nothing lasts forever and the 747 had a hell of an epic run and it's fricking amazing it's lasted this long from its debut in the 60s.

The new 777x will be a good replacement for it.

I have.

Qantas. Dallas to Sydney. Business class, upper deck iirc. It was a very nice experience.

Also, a talking head on one of the cable shows tonight said there are alternate ways of getting into a locked cockpit. He didn't go into it, apparently it's a closely held secret. Just throwing it out there.

I work directly with airlines through my job and some give pilots master keys to the cockpit doors.

Whether they keep it on their person or in their flight bag is a different story.

Crazy there isn't a way to override that.

My gf who works for Luftansa said there is a way to overide the door it but its very hard.

She has actually flown on this exact plane beofre it became part of the German Wings fleet.

They just updated the 747 why would they stop in 10 years?

Boeing is going to produce that thing as long as they can.

An expert on cnbc just said there would have been a keypad to let the pilot back into the cockpit and the whole crew knows the code. The fact that he was locked out shows the door may have been on an override which is troubling.

The French are holding a press conference right now. They're saying the co-pilot intentionally pushed a button to start the plane's decent and he also refused to allow the pilot back into the cabin. This is either a nutjob suicide or an act of terrorism.

Just got an AP alert saying a prosecutor says the copilot intentionally performed the descent and was acting alone to destroy the plane.

This is terrible. We should know more about the co-pilot's history in the next couple of days.

If I had to guess at this point, I'd lean more to this being a nutjob suicide than an act of terror. I base that on the fact terrorist have their whole Alla-ackbar cry they like to yell right before they do their damage. This guy was totally silent till the end.

All the prosecutor has said so far about the co-pilot is that he was a German citizen

Is this the thread where everyone has turned into a plane and pilot expert?

Going to need 3 in a cockpit from now on. Is that even possible space wise in an aircraft this size? An A320 or 737. These appear to be the main two run of the mill type planes.
