In the grand scheme of things? For example, starting up your own firm.

No. It is better to be in the top 10% of a lowly regarded law school than to be back of the pack at a mid-tier. Obviously, the top 20 schools are tickets to the game in larger firms in larger cities, but you're just joining another highly competitive game at that point.

If you're going to hang out your own shingle - either soon after graduating, or after 3 to 5 years learning the ropes at a family/friend firm or a smaller firm in a smaller town, where you went to law school or what it was ranked will mean little, if anything to your long-term success. Competence, hard work, hustle to get clients and luck - in some combination will be far more important.

Starting your own firm? No. Not at all.

You just have to sell yourself. Every time you meet a potential client, you're really at a job interview.

Clients don't give a shite where you went to law school. They just want a winner.

Firms care about law school rankings. Prospective students care about law school rankings.

They do matter, but they aren't everything.

If you want to be a Supreme Court Justice you had better go to Yale, Harvard, or Stanford.

Do you hear anything on those TV ads about:

"Hey, I was on Law Review?"
"I went to Harvard?"
"I graduated top 10 in my class?"

That crap don't matter!

A law firm is a business. You better have business skills.

I don't even remember my law school ranking. That's how unimportant it is to everyone except civil defense firms.

Yeah class ranking. That's not what we're talking about here?

If we're talking actual ranking of the school, then no one cares unless it's a top 15 or so school.

Yeah, but I've seen some job postings (in big cities) where they require a J.D. from a Top 25 law school.

I imagine the bigger firms like the prestigious names because it makes their brand more prestigious as well.

Top 15, top 25, something like that. None of it matters to a solo bc clients never ask.

I got into a top 10 school and had to withdraw due to crippling OCD and anxiety. It haunts me every day of my life.
