Holy shite, i can't imagine how daunting a task that would be. You really know nothing about the practice. Best to work at a small firm for a few years to get ready, but don't linger too long or you get trapped.

Need to attend a top 14 if you're going to do corporate.

Otherwise, it doesn't matter all that much.

Frankly, the connections/networking matter more coming from a top tier law school, not the reputation of the school itself. Same thing for top tier business schools.

Ummm

I'd guess not always. Unless if you live in the big metro areas (NYC, dc, Philly etc)

If it consoles you I graduated from American Samoa University.

Our top grad was a man named Saul

Pretty shady but reliable and a winner

This is a very true statement.

The tier of law school can make a difference in landing your first job but it likely doesn't matter much once you have established a reputation as a lawyer.
However, in landing your first job, your class rank will matter much more than your law school rank.

My words of slight wisdom;
I wouldn't hesitate in attending any law school at any tier if the price is right.

$150-250K debt can be financially crippling to a person or family.
Who's taking home more money in a 20 year span? One with a $75-90k salary with no debt or one with $160k salary but holds $250k debt?

Work hard, get good grades in college, attain a leadership role in some organization, and try your best on the LSAT...you will be fine.

It depends. You can take a Yale law degree to almost any city in the Southeast and get a job at most firms.

I have friends with Southern Law degrees that are doing well and friends with LSU Law degrees that couldn't hack it as attorneys.

The better school will get you in with better firms at the start.

A degree from a shitty school followed by a great track record as an attorney will get you into a decent firm.

If you're going it on your own, doesn't matter where your degree is from.

Hell no.

They don't matter unless you are going to work at 6 minute intervals. Even then, no, not really.
They matter if you want to get paid well working those 6 minute intervals. I learned, after several years, I couldn't be paid enough to do that anymore.

If i come out of a top 30 university with a 3.5 GPA and ace the LSAT will that basically guarantee me a spot in one of the top 10 law schools?

No, unless you are going for a top 50 firm. Just get that first job and start getting experience. Find a niche area if you can.I get calls from recruiters all the time and I went to a crap law school. I do tax, trust and estates work for clients that have federal estate tax exposure. I have been in this area for about 8 years.

Yeah, but I bet you have an LLM. You have to admit that changes things. It's really the only guaranteed niche out there.

You would have to crush the LSAT.

Look at student profile statistics and see what your chances. Lots of the top schools have a lot of international students. And, you have to face the reality that a young white man from certain parts of the country will have a harder time than most.

I played all the cards I could. Hispanic, from a poor state (Mississippi), Katrina victim, prior work experience, etc.

True. I also work in a region (NYC/Northern NJ) where I have strong client base.

Does not matter at all.

Getting a job out of state at a big firm us really the only thing it matters for.

So a top tier school gets you $45/hr first few years out of school? That sucks.

Lets say you go to YHS or CCN. You get a job at a V10 making $160k right out of school. You're officially going for 2000/2100 hours - but the reality of the legal practice and the nature of the billable hours model (Allah help you if you're trying to make partner) mean you'll be in the office for much, much longer.

You do the math. Frankly I wouldn't even want to work at Kean Miller. "Mid Law" is the way to go.

Nobody gives a shite what school you went to, unless you're trying to secure your daughter's spot in the debutante ball.

Go to an accredited, non-profit university. Major in underwater basketweaving, earning a 4.0 GPA. Twerk the LSAT, 170+. Congratulations, Mr. White Male, enjoy your time at Stanford/Harvard at sticker or Chicago on scholarship.
