fortunately Jose, not too many people will care where you went to school when their appendix has ruptured or they're having a gall-bladder attack.

You do you and pass the boards, and the inquiry of you will never go past your name on the white coat.

I kicked around the idea of going to med school right when I got to college. The idea of cutting into soft tissue doesn't bother me. Re-setting bones, cutting bone, breaking bone, etc. freaks me out. But I still wonder if could have done it. My cousin who I lived with right when I moved to LSU is just finishing school. It would be nice to make that money.

I know of heart sugeons in our area making 50k per month. I could live with that.

I work with em everyday.....some are really cool and some arse holes just like any other job.

I personally could probably only do vascular but I ll take my lifestyle over theirs anyday of the week.

Some general surgeons I work with work 90 hours a week only to be compensated like they worked 60.....

I prefer a job where I work 45 but get paid like I worked 60.

Most definitely not. If I was a surgeon I'd probably do it long enough to retire very early. But that's why I'm not a surgeon!

FYI, it's one of those jobs that always ranks high on the psychopath list (in the clinical sense, not talking criminals). Probably due to the extreme confidence and focus one has to have.

I had the brains and the hands. Always at the top academically, had my choice of colleges or professions, excellent hands. But my Social Anxiety Disorder affects my ability to make split-second judgements, especially in the presence of other people. With the onlookers you have in an OR, I'd have brain freeze. Chose the easy route of dentistry, and for the most part worked without an assistant.

Stomach, yeah. Steady hands, hell no. I am incredible uncoordinated and would for sure kill a patient or two.

I can deal with the blood and the actual surgical procedure and I have pretty steady hands. But my problem is there is no way I would want to go through all the training and night call it takes to be a surgeon. I assist in surgery now and the guys I work with trained for 7 years and were on call every 2-3 days during that time. I don't care how much money they make, it takes a special person to do that.

First off, no. There are a ton of Caribbean schools. Yes, some just let anyone in; but some do not. Some have a very tough pre-med portion if they think you may not be ready for medical school (don't meet the pre-reqs).

You can look at it however you want. I look at it as a ticket to the Step 1 exam.

My wife is a surgeon. It is so hard for me to imagine her in the OR barking orders and being wrist deep inside someone's abdominal cavity. Luckily, she starts her breast surgery fellowship soon so her quality of life at work will greatly improve.

How much do surgeons make?

All depends on your area of expertise. General surgeons probably make the least. I have a client that is a surgical oncologist and he makes over $1 to $2 million a year.

There is always the superstar. But as a general rule, what $250,000 to $400,000?

It also depends if you are private practice or not.

Private makes more usually. Again, depends on the area of expertise.
