you can make that as an ER doc and work a faction of the hrs a surgeon will, and also no call

So true. My wife's best friend just finished his residency and he makes about $165k and works 30 hours a week. He was a little disappointed because he only wanted to work 27 hrs a week. Basically, he works 3 days a week. She also has another friend that just took a job in Tampa and he is making a little over $300k, but I am not sure how many hours he has to work per week.

This CBS Report says that doctor's pay is declining, and it might be a costly mistake to be a doctor.

if it's a persons goal to become an MD then I wouldn't worry, most are extremely well compensated

I am finishing up my Orthopedic residency and love what I do. If you are in this for the money you will either quit or be very unhappy. Its too difficult of a job to do it for only the money.

Also good luck Jose. My future sister in law and brother in law are carribean trained and are very good physicians. Where you go to school has no effect on what kind of physician you will be.

Honestly, wouldn't be in it for the money. It's probably third on the scale of importance to me so meh. Putting in the studies to be an orthopaedic surgeon right now... Rough ride thus far.

i have been bedside for my son( whom is now deceased) as they began working to revive his heart. His chest was open since he just had surgery. So I got to see pretty much all his anatomy. Not bragging but I have never had that type of adrenaline rush and don't think I will again.

I kind of think a lot of people who do this do it for the money. "I love to help people?" WTF. People love to help themselves.

The take home pay (after insurance, expenses, etc. etc.) is extremely high. And there is a prestige factor.

If you really want to "help people" why didn't you get a sales job and volunteer at the homeless shelter?

What other careers start around $200k? What about the dude whom makes $1-2 million? A lot of helping going on.

Considering that he writes off at least that much a year then I say he is helping people. He takes no co-pays and only takes what the insurance company reimburses him. He does a number of surgeries that he collects maybe 10% of what he bills. No complaints.

I agree. Making $1-2 million a year is very reasonable. It's not like we have a healthcare crisis or it's expensive or anything.

Maybe once you take that guys penis out your mouth you could suggest him for the next Pope?

Physically saving someone, in an immediate life threatening situation with your own hands, is very different than donating money or volunteering.

So this justifies the big $$$$$?

School bus driver take the lives of our kids in their hands every day, seems like they should get a bigger piece too.

Lot of money going to save the "immediate life threats" and not so much to education, food supply, and other basic necessities and things that save the lives of generations of people, not just the immediate problems.
