My wife and I are contemplating a move. We have three kids (14,12, 2) and would like to move somewhere that provides the kids with better schooling and opportunities for success later on in life. We'd also like the job and housing market to be bountiful.

Any of you know of any areas that meet all of our criteria?

Sorry, I forgit I started this post until now. To answer some of the questions that I saw on the first few pages:

I work in oil and gas and I'm tired of working away from my family. I would like to stay in the industry but it's not a necessity for me to do so. My wife would like to teach. Right now, she stays home with our 1 year old. My wife hates the cold, so northern locations are out of the question.

And for the one smart arse that made the comment about "if you're a halfway decent parent, then your kids will still get a quality education in Louisiana" ...we are good parents and our kids make outstanding grades, but the schools here are cramp and I want better for them. Better education and better opportunities to succeed after they graduate.

Houston, if you don't mind commuting from the burbs in order to get the good schools.

I think you might need to narrow this down just a wee bit.

It would be really hard to beat Houston in terms of cost of living and quality of life. The suburbs offer some of the best school districts in the country.

If he finds a way to wiggle out of the finest state in America...If he finds a way not to enjoy Louisiana...If he doesn't want to stay home, hell with him.

North Carolina (Research Triangle Area). Charleston ( Dorchester and Mt. Pleasant school districts).

Houston does if you don't mind endless suburbs and traffic. DFW has much of the same (Fort Worth has some really nice areas).
Denver area is really nice.

The key is careers. Are you making upward moves, sideways moves, or downward moves. What is the difference in cost of living?

Remember, what you save in private school tuition, you may make up for in home prices and property taxes.

I was hoping someone would say NC. I recently moved to the mountains and the schools are great. We have been looking for homes with a 500k budget, but have been finding homes of 3500sqft or more for way less than that.

If you want to stay in the South, consider North Carolina.

I have a ton of South Carolina pride, but there are simply better opportunities in North Carolina.

You laugh, but I have a theory that I see played out in Jackson everyday.

1. Madison, MS - a suburb of Jackson offers everything you would want. Safe neighborhoods, great schools, awesome neighborhoods.

My theory on Jackson is that the average/above average person can excel here more than they can in a Houston or Atlanta where the competition is better. Is your degree from an SEC institution - wow, you are among the best and brightest. In a bigger city, you are competing against Ivy or Kudzu league graduates.

My case study involves my neighbor. He's an idiot. I'm not sure how he makes it out of his driveway every morning. But he's a director at a decent size organization and probably makes six figures. In Houston he might be homeless.

I'd look into Charlotte as well. Or maybe Nashville.
