Reading the responses in this thread I have to ask. You guys do know that there are 48 states in the US besides La. and Texas, right?
My thoughts exactly. Wow.

Houston is an easy answer, but there are so damned many people here and that "cost of living in a big city" line is becoming more and more false every day.
Houston has gotten just as expensive as every other big city, and with no mass transit our traffic has gotten much noticeably worse in the last 3 to 5 years.
It is nice that it is close to Louisiana if you still have family or a place there you want to visit, though.
If you want Texas, I'd honestly look at San Antonio. It doesn't have all the glitz and glam of Austin but there's jobs, affordable living, culture, reasonable traffic, proximity to beautiful outdoor spaces, and a slower pace of life more akin to Louisiana than Houston, Dallas, or Austin.

It's hard to beat the quality of life in those TX areas at a reasonable price. Next door to LA. Driving distance back to where I grew up (NOLA). Only other place I would live with OP's situation would be the NC/SC coast

seriously, it's depressing
It kinda is.
"Oh I left Louisiana. I needed to explore and see what else is out there."
"Where did you move?"
"One state over in Texas!"
And love the OP just leaving this here with no specifics about what kind of jobs his wife and him have....and then logging off

You can only major in engineering, only work in oil and gas, and only live in Louisiana or Texas.

Sure, but those cities fit his criteria very well and he hasn't exactly expanded on his wish list since then.

Well if his criteria is simply a good place with good schools for his children, then there are plenty of other places that are on the same level or better than Texas.

Well he mentioned schools, and I'm assuming he meant public schools since nany La private schools aren't all that bad. Texas public schools outside of a few nice communities are shite.

Sure there are, I just can't think of any that I'd want to live in

Right. It's pointless to provide a response to this.
And the poor schools reason is a copout. If you're a halfway decent parent to your kids and make informed decisions your kids will be fine being educated in Louisiana.
Just not liking the state because of the people, not meshing w/ interests, etc. is a much better reason.

I fail to find anything inaccurate about that post. Are those not the only options in life?

I'd say that is a valid reason to move if you are a parent and don't want to or cannot afford private school. It's pretty sad that in cities like BR...it's just accepted that the public schools are crap and you better either move out the city to a better school district or fork up the money for private.

What kind of climate are you limited to?
You could live a pretty idealistic American life in Bloomongton, IL and many other cold places. Schools in Texas are better than Louisiana's but aren't up to par with many of the small and medium towns of the mid-west and Northeast.
Salt Lake City may also be an option.
