It's funny that not a single friend that I know changes their own oil. Probably because they aren't grease monkeys. Never known a single person to have this crazy issue of getting stranded on the side of the road due to some fck up at the oil change place.

And I don't believe anyone with the bullshite time line of saying they can change the oil in less than 25 minutes. Nor do I believe most who are bitching about a 45 minute wait at the oil change place.

Now I def. will argue that one should cut their own grass like I do, but changing your own oil is not for me any more.

My wife had a cross threaded drain plug from an oil change place in Covington before we got married. It luckily didn't screw the engine up as she didn't live far from the place.

And it's 15 mins or less from the time I take my tools out til I turn on the motor and let the engine circulate the new oil when I'm done. I'm 33 and have been changing oil in vehicles since I was 14.

First Minute: remove oil drain plug and let oil start draining
Second Minute: Remove oil filter and place it upside down in oil drain pan.
Third Minute - Drink a beer and let oil fully finish dripping out of oil pan.
Eleventh Minute: Install new oil filter
Twelfth Minute: Replace drain plug. Do not over-tighten or cross thread (haven't done either one in 40+ years)
Thirteenth Minute - Drink another beer
Seventeenth Minute - Remove oil filler cap and insert funnel
Eighteenth Minute - Pour in fresh oil
Nineteenth Minute - Start engine
Twentieth Minute: Stop engine, check for any leaks (none in 40+ years)
Twenty First Minute - Check dip stick for oil level
Twenty Second Minute - Reset oil change indicator light inside vehicle.
Twenty fourth minute - pour old oil into jug
Twenty Fifth minute - DONE!

If you change when it's cold, you're doing it wrong.

I didn't account for the engine being warm in my time frame. I thought that was a given considering we are comparing it to driving to an oil change place.

So you don't count the time of going to the white trash store to buy your shite. Then you have to either get the car up on a ramp or jack it up.
And fck, every new vehicle I get it seems to get more complicated to change the oil.
And count the time to take it somewhere to drain.

Sorry, my time is worth too much money.

I change my own so I can clean my frame, rotate my tires, and do other crap. Plus I only use oem filters and royal purple oil.

I can change my oil in less than ten minutes.
No jack. Lay out a pan then a collection tub, take off filter, put new one on, put plug back on, fill up and done.
My first ever job was changing oil

And it cost me more to do it myself than it would to go to an oil change place.

I've never really considered it until I brought my fairly new F150 in for its first change recently and the bill was 87 fricking dollars. Surely, it's got to be cheaper than that to DYI it, right? This was at 5-Minute, which I've gone to for years.

Huh? I don't know any DIY oil change guys that take more than 15 min. ??

Until reading this I just assumed the vast majority of guys did it themselves. I like knowing it was done right and it gets done in 10-15 every time. Don't get why someone would say their time was too valuable to waste that 15 min. What are you doing when you're waiting at the shop?

Getting paid usually if it's anytime M-F.

My weekends are too valuable to spend on this and I consider my free time twice as valuable per hour as my work time.

Usually do mine after work. 2-3x per year that isn't difficult to manage.

Do you ever wonder why? Cheap oil and filters are no way to go thru life. I had an ex that brought her car to a quick lube place. They forgot to fill it with oil. That cost me like $4k because they aren't liable.

If I'm not mistaken they use Penzoil there(or they claim anyway) , I've never paid attention to the filter brand. I will look a little closer next time I'm there. I know it is $96.00 for me to buy the stuff or $92.00 at the quick lube, I figured the difference in price was me buying the oil by the quart vs them by the tanker load. That and using the low priced oil change as a reason to get you in the door and try to up sell from there. I generally do all of the work that I am capable of on our vehicles, this just seemed like a no brainier though.

On a side note, the one up from our office left the oil plug loose on my bosses work truck and was 100% responsible for replacing the engine when it locked up the next day.

I live about 6 miles from the nearest oil change place. Would take about 10 minutes each way to drive there. Takes me less time and energy to do it at home. I'll still take the cars to an oil change place on occasion, usually because I need an oil change then and there. Instead of making a special trip to buy oil, filters, etc it's easier to just take it to the quick oil change place. I normally just buy oil and filters when I think about it while I'm already out and about and change my oil at my convenience.

I have a drum of new oil in the shop.

I have a drum of used oil behind the shop.

I drive in with the motor at full temp, pull the plug, and have a drink while it drains. The filter is changed every 10k, the oil is changed every 5k.

I check diffs, u joints, transfer case, and suspension parts while under it.

Before I fill up, I give the air filter a good cleaning, top off the wiper fluid, and check coolant.

Whole process is under 30 minutes. Just hit 150k and would drive to Alaska without having to check anything.

I change my own oil. I pull up over a ditch or some crawfish holes and drain it directly onto the ground. I do this at random locations so I don't get caught.

I couldn't change my own oil if I wanted to. I should learn. The first time would be like Larry David trying to gift wrap those sunglasses. "Now I need a pan and a 5 gallon bucket? Can you get the bucket at the same place as the pan? What a process this is...boy, very complicated."
