Why would you spend $45k on a used car? I'd just buy a new one if I'm spending that much. You can get some of the upper tier/luxury sedans and crossovers for that.

Because you can get a (subjectively) better car by buying used. Using the Audi example: I'd much rather have a certified pre-owned A6 3.0 - with a warranty up to 100,000 miles - than a new hum-drum A4 with a 36,000 mile warranty.

i currently own a sonata and am a board certified hyndai cheerleader. i'm looking hard at the 2015 genesis options when i start looking in a year or so. biggest advantage for me is that i can have it serviced locally here in LC

i don't want to have to go to lafayette/houston/BR for basic bullshite

i don't even think the toyota dealership here will service the lexus options (not 100% on this)

Great fuel economy and a more peppy feel.

Downside is maintenance. Modern diesels are expensive to operate despite the amazing fuel mileage.

Coming from a guy with a Volkswagen diesel that has averaged 50.4 mpg over the past 10k miles.

That seems horribly overpriced. That's just my gut instinct, I haven't shopped them.

That's actually pretty cheap. The 2011+ SRT8's retailed close to $60k and they retain value really well. My uncle had a black 2012 with the black vapor chrome rims and about 18-20k miles on his lot not too log ago...they were asking $52k and think they ended up getting $50k for it.

The Hyundais if you want it to last a long time

The Audis are great cars, but seem to get a lot of downtime in the shop.

pics of the european equivalent of the 2015 Mercedes C300. Same size as the 2014 E Class with a much better interior than the E Class. Spend $5K more and opt for the C400, V6 TT with more hp and tq than the current E class.

For 45k I'd look into an s5, s4, a6 or c63 in that order, and also depending if you want a coupe, mid size or full size car

Only issue with a c63 is that you will be getting the previous generation body style.

Im looking at the A8 with the 3.0 Diesel. Gets 45ish mph on the hwy and I do a lot of hwy miles. Pretty quick too.

whats not to like about an suv under 50k that goes 0-60 in 4.5 seconds?

Because it doesn't. It's under 5 seconds but closer to 5 than 4.5

Fuel mileage and power are superior to gasoline engines.

I also produce my own diesel, which saves me a TON of money. My daily driver ('77 Mercedes 300D) gets kick-arse mileage and is a tank. I guess I could convert my truck ('66 Chevy C10) to a diesel somehow but I am not that savvy and I don't want to pay for it.

I've had a Cayenne and currently own an Audi SQ5.

If you look at Cayenne look a Cayenne S. Personally in your situation if I was looking the SUV route I'd look at a Porsche Macan if I was looking new or try to find a used Audi SQ5 which is based on the same platform. The Macan apparently handles ridiculously well for a small SUV but is going to push your budget up $10-$15k depending on options.

I found a used SQ5 for $15k under list and snapped it up. It's a blast to drive and is a great looking car with nice fit and finish and more acceleration than you ever need from an SUV. It offers similar performance to the Macan S (which is still a turbo). Of course the Macan Turbo outperforms it by a good margin but it will also set you back about $80k after options.

Best of luck.

The SQ5 is a great example of why I am looking at CPO vs. new...cars.com prices for new are all around $68,000 for new 2014 or 2015 model while a 2014 CPO with 5,000 can be bought for $57,000. This is still at the very high-end of what I would be willing to consider, but I would plan on keeping the car for ~8 years if I went the SUV route. SQ5 could be a great balance between performance and functionality.

The Porsche's are very nice but the prices are just a bit too high for me. Thanks for the post!
