Jackson's downtown makes BR's downtown look like Manhattan.

I never felt unsafe in downtown BR, but I was always uneasy about downtown Jackson. I got robbed outside of George Street Tavern 40 feet in front of a cop who was asleep in his car. for JPD (they are so bad they make BRPD look like a well run police force).

I grew up outside BR, stationed in Montgomery while in the Air Force, and worked and live just outside Jackson now.

BR hands down is the best. It's all about the people. If you can't have fun in BR with those semi-Cajuns you're jacked up. As far as aesthetics none are very nice. I'd go with Nashville as the best southern Capitol though.

Never been to Jackson, but I lived in BR and go to Montgomery frequently. I'd say they're about what and what.

I mean, when you reach a certain level of craptastic, is there really a point in differentiating?

When I first starting traveling to MGM for work, this is exactly how I described it to my wife.

A lot of people like to bitch about BR but its a pretty good city. It's main problem is being so close to an awesome city like Nola so that it seems worse in comparison than it really is.

I've spent only limited time in Montgomery and Jackson but I seriously doubt that they suck less. Idk which of those two sucks more though.

So that means Montgomery > BR....

J/K. I grew up in Montgomery. Its terrible. If you have a good paying job and already have a family, its not bad but get ready to spend $10K per year per kid for school. Its also a terrible city to be in if you're single. Montgomery is probably one bad mayor away from really going down the toilet.

Lived in and around Montgomery all my life. South of I85 is a freaking war zone. Just last week there was a shooting outside Walmart. The largest hospital in the city recently had a shooting in the parking lot.

They are trying to revitalize downtown and doing a good job with it. Southside though is nothing but title pawns and note toting car lots.

I grew up in Cloverdale and my parents still live there. Its sad because that is a great neighborhood with some many beautiful streets. Those neighborhoods are strong and high income residents. However, if you go just a few streets away, its like a different town. You can hear gunshots all the time. I have friends who live in McGhee Estates and they literally have something stolen every week.

The Southern BLVD is sad. Just sprawl that has killed everything of value all the way to the Montgomery Mall. The flight to the East has really crippled midtown but there seems to be a focus on fixing that. What they've done downtown should be a model for other Southern Cities but IMO, there's a ceiling there. Like I said above, Montgomery could be in trouble once Strange leaves office. Gone are the days of Emory Folmer ruling the city with an iron fist. God help you if Joe Hubbard runs.

No, not even close. As much as I dislike Jackson, it's not as bad as Montgomery.

I live in Jackson. It's pretty much a shithole at first glance but if you factor in the hole in the wall places and the burbs like flowood, Madison and Ridgeland, it's not half bad. Also the traffic isn't a major issue if you know which roads to avoid at certain times

Agreed. Jackson has some very good restaurants and a good scene in Fondren.

I'm from Baton Rouge and married a girl from Jackson that I met when we both went to Ole Miss.

I know both cities very well.

Baton Rouge is better only because of LSU and more things to do. If it weren't for LSU, Baton Rouge and Jackson would be very, very similar. LSU brings an injection of money into the city that Jackson can't replicate.

Baton Rouge's downtown is also reviving much faster than Jackson's. Both are progressing though.

Fondren is a cool area, but its very small. Also, my mother-in-law's elderly, good friend was just shot and killed by some urban youths in Fondren in the middle of the day. Its still got a long ways to go and it doesn't redeem and entire city of shite. The new restaurants have improved, but there are still limited numbers and the city's infrastructure, shockingly, is worse than Baton Rouge's. That is hard to believe, but its true.

There is a reason for the white flight to Madison and Ridgeland. The racism there is stronger than any major city I've ever been to as well (Memphis is close). Thing is though, you almost don't blame them for it after spending a lot of time in Jackson.

Montgomery is far and away the worst of the 3 however. Anyone saying otherwise must be from Alabama. Hell, even my Alabama friends call that place the biggest shite hole in the state.

I don't want to live in any of them.

I stayed there for two long weekends and explored the city as best I could both times. (engagement party and wedding)

shite hole doesn't begin to describe it.
