how is it racist to want to live in safety?

That's not really what I meant.

I went to wedding in Jackson last Summer (I think May). The sister of the bride, who was also Maid of Honor, had a serious boyfriend that was black.

Her parents, both of which are doctors (mom retired) and respected members of the community, wouldn't allow her to invite him to the rehearsal dinner or wedding. Just the reception.

I am not kidding.

Nicest people in the world too. The bride was appalled, but didn't find out until after. The sister didn't want to upset her. I met the boyfriend at the reception. Really cool guy from Portland, OR.

ETA:

and you skipped this part I added about the "white flight for safety".

Thing is though, you almost don't blame them for it after spending a lot of time in Jackson.

White flight is often portrayed as neighborhoods packing it up once a black family moves in.

In reality it is usually the slow fleeing of a community from ghetto that is creeping in from surrounding locales.

Anyway, white flight is negated by hipsters who are willing to move into shitty areas and prove how devoted to cultural diversity they are. I mean, they almost all move after their door gets kicked in for the 4th time, but more enlightened folks will take their place.

Agreed.

And schools are a big part of that.

Agreed.

I think Jackson just needs about 10,000 more hipsters

Bad areas, white or black, are like bacteria taking over a city. Hipsters are like slow-working, resilient antibiotics.

My friends and I hang out in Fondren all the time, I do not feel unsafe there. Downtown Jackson is making a slow revitalization, and people who do not work downtown are always making comments to me about how dangerous it is to work downtown, but I honestly don't see it. I walk to Parlor Market, The Elite, Regions Bank, Museum of Art and Keifers on a regular basis and have never encountered any shady characters in the two years I have lived here. Is downtown hopping like downtown BR at night? Not yet, but there are a lot of developments under way that will hopefully get the ball rolling faster.

I think Jackson can turn things around, it's just gonna take a lot of hipsters moving to town to make it happen.

I live in Baton Rouge & have been to Jackson many of times. I've been through Montgomery a few times too but don't know enough to comment.

1) Baton Rouge: It gets alot of hate on here but it's not as bad as people make it seem & is only improving day by day. The location of LSU in Baton Rouge helps it alot but the revitalization of downtown is only strengthening its claim. Recently, the city's turn to private & public sector partnerships (e.g. LSU/IBM, LSU/Water Institute, etc) has made Baton Rouge very attractive in recruiting businesses to the city. However, we do need a loop, improve our infrastructure, better suburbs and a revamp in our K-12 education system. The jobs are here, record number more are coming, and our economy is currently one of the top in the country & many publications are taking notice. LINK

Jackson: They're actually trying to model Baton Rouge in hope to revitalize their downtown. Here's an article from the Clarion-Ledger (Jackson newspaper). However, from an outsiders perspective Jackson seems dead and lacks many things a great city has (culture, arts, economic development, etc). But, no one can argue that they don't have very good suburbs. Madison is badass

3)Montgomery: It's in the state of Alabama

Lol the hipsters I see moving into Jackson aren't revitalizing the areas or properties.

Need different kinds of hipsters! They should kidnap the Austin ones and inject them into West Jackson.

About this:

A Bodega on the ground floor of the Standard Life building didn't make it. Adobo restaurant opened in its place in 2012.

I was really shocked Adobo didn't make it. Every time I went there for lunch, every table was taken.

I agree with this for the most part.

However, my wife is not walking around alone in Fondren at night. Period. I love Fondren area and think its really neat, but we literally knew an elderly woman shot and killed there in recent weeks in the middle of the day.

FWIW, I have partied raucously dozens of times at F. Jones with seedy characters, George St. with friends, and eat the HELL out of some Keifers.

Our cars have been broken into twice in Downtown Jackson as well, which sucked.

ETA:

We live in Nashville and I could leave a new Rolex on the sidewalk and there'd be a community effort to find its proper owner . The fire department might even get involved if they aren't too busy getting cats out of trees in front of the great public schools.

jk, kind of.

Jackson's suburbs are way nicer. Madison, MS is Mayberry with money. That's one redeeming quality.

Jackson itself could implode tomorrow and there would be an improvement.

F Jones might be the only place I have been at night downtown where I felt a slight hint of danger.

Agreed. However, this thread isn't about surrounding areas. Baton Rouge has LSU and a better downtown INSIDE city limits.

I thrive in seedy bars. That's probably why I am in love with New Orleans. The music there is genuine and nasty. My favorite bar in Jackson

I'm not disagreeing that Baton Rouge has a better downtown, but it is hardly the backbreaker. Baton Rouge has probably one of the most disappointing downtowns for a city its size.

LSU puts Baton Rouge ahead of Jackson, but not by much.

It might be. There are like six black children at Madison Station Elementary School and I shop at this Lowe's

and this Kroger
