From what little research I've done and from talking to my friends doing the Paleo thing, I really can't say it should be considered a fad diet. At it's core, it seems like a good approach to healthier eating. Of course I will never follow anything very strictly.

Then do more research and try using primary sources when you do. As it is promoted, it is a fad. People touting it as a reason for their rapid initial weight loss generally seem to conveniently forget that happens anytime you get your lazy arse moving and start eating a bit better regardless of a specific diet. People are making money promoting these diets because they know most people don't have the education to question the claims and do their own homework.

What of the success many are having overcoming GI issues, diabetes, thyroid issues, allergies, MS, etc - that people attribute to a paleo diet? Is that a fad?

$12/ meal isn't bad, I just like preparing my meals myself. It keeps me honest and is easier to stick to the routine.

People lose weight or have body re-composition and immediately attribute it to their body responding to "the way humans are suppose to eat". They ignore the fact that by eliminating many items they normally would eat, they've lowered their calorie intake.

I contribute my weight loss to not eating like a fat arse and no longer watching 3 hours of TV every night.

more power to you but if you read a lot of the paleo propaganda, the weight loss and body recomp is attributed to some type of pseudo science body synergy created by eating the way humans are designed to eat.

I maintain <10% bodyfat year round eating 450g carbs per day. I'd put my bloodwork up against any of these paleo super-humans.

That can occur with just about any diet as long as they are getting a proper balance of nutrients. You honestly think that it was strictly eating paleo or eating better in general contributed to those results? I also know some of those conditions are from genetic abnormalities and no diet is going to cure those issues but it doesn't stop low-info types from making the claims in absence of solid empirical evidence. It's a fad diet no matter how much you like it.

I take issue with any diet that excludes certain foods on the basis of poorly documented to non-existent evidence. You can be perfectly healthy eating breads, dairy products, beans, bacon, etc. as long as they don't make up a super majority of your diet day in and day out. I bake a loaf of plain white bread every week, go through a gallon of whole milk a week, make at least one batch of hummus every week for salads and sandwiches, and I'd smoke the dog crap out of the average paleo diet touting crossfit junkie. Not because of any particular diet or exercise routine but because I stick to moderation and variety in what I eat and how I exercise and have been doing so for more than 20 years.

sorry, Drew. No genetic advantage here. Hard work in the gym and knowing how to construct a diet to support my goals.

Are olives considered Paleo? Just curious because it could be a deal breaker.

carbs

and a carb is just another calorie source. Once you find the right amount of protein that works for you, the rest of your calories can be in the form of slow digesting carbs. It's all about finding your caloric maintenance and making adjustments from there. Most people don't want to take the time to establish these numbers so they just latch on to fad or program.

I should note that I take in no fat outside of animal protein and I do allow for cheat meals/beer/alcohol.

You're right, I'm not taking the time to figure out those numbers.

I eat until I get full, and I usually eat 5-6 small meals a day. My meals are mostly natural foods (try to stay with 5 ingredients or less). I have an extremely high metabolism and it doesn't take much for me to get full.

I agree that some people take the paleo diet too far, but at it's core it's a solid foundation to build on.

No diet by itself will transform your body with out exercise and you can exercise all day and still be unhealthy if you don't eat right.

I meant 450 grams of what kind of carbs...

whole wheat bagel, brown rice, green veggies have trace amounts but I eat a lot. These can vary but you get the idea.

What's your typical day?

not posting a detailed diet here but the breakdown is roughly 50% carb, 35% pro, 15% fat.

Also, only fats are animal?

No Olive Oil?

I occasionally cook with olive oil. I do take in fish oils and have low fat cottage cheese before bed. Should have noted that the bulk of my dietary fat comes from the lean meat I eat.

I use to seek out additional fat sources for my diet (nuts, avocado, whole eggs) but read a few books that suggested getting away from that when taking in a large amount of carbs per day. Ever since I've been able to add calories to my diet and lean up at the same time. By no means am I saying that fats aren't good for you. It's just what I do.

So rough math means you eat 3600 calories a day?

You think that is a lot? How much stock do you put in that 2,000 - 2,500 Calories/day guideline?

I know a couple who have been on it for about 1 year. They were severely overweight before. I bet they have collectively lost 300 lbs and still do not work out.
