This reminds me a ton of the LSU/Miles situation

The only thing that this reminds me of the Miles situation is just like Miles, Gentry should be fired now, just like Miles should've been fired after Texas A&M.

Now we are toying around with giving Gentry a chance to see how it goes next year and I can see how this could go the same way the Miles experiment began last year. If that is the case and we start off slow, we will be shite out of luck.

If there is this much doubt if we should keep him or not, why the hell not just do it now and start fresh to begin the season.

That is more what I meant. It was difficult for LSU to feel pressure to fire Miles when the money coming in was still top notch despite his under performance towards the end by fans' expectations.

I am in no way saying Miles at the beginning of his time at LSU. I am taking about 2014-2016. It is the point that much like LSU was then, the Pelicans are going to get their money either way, so why pony up cash to hire a new GM and coach on top of firing the old ones and paying them.

I was blown away too. Got this info about four hours ago and am still trying to process it. I am so thankful for Vivek because this is the deal we make if the Kings don't give us Boogie

Seriously, I wouldn't have even said 'I told you so' if the Dwight deal went down. I would have just sulked through a whole pod and thrown up my hands on this shite show

The win-now mandate rears its ugly head again.

Makes sense why last year we supposedly handcuffed Demps at the deadline. What doesn't make sense is that we seemingly took them off this season and let him play with house money knowing he needed a grand slam to keep his job.

No Vivek and this team very well could of been on pace for a Nets like existence. My god.

more than that, a trade for Howard is indicative of a team that has had no clue what to do with Davis.

Exactly the opposite. AD actually demanded they get a center. HE was the reason Boogie, Dwight, and Lopez were the top targets

It's hard to give him even partial blame but his unwillingness to play center almost totally screwed this franchise twice

I can believe that Davis forced their hand. I assume the other time he almost screwed them was Asik FA.

I get it from Davis's perspective. But his unwillingness to be a 5 is a big problem.

Getting Cousins for that deal was unbelievably lucky. Problems w/ Boogie, but he at least has the tools to make it work with Davis on both ends. Howard would be a disaster. Lopez on offense would be legit, defense no bueno

Davis has a 4's body frame. He needs to be a 4.

AD is a 5 in today's NBA. He needs to get the f over it.

prediction-->

Davis, for all his incredible talents, will never be on a title contending team if he will exclusively be a 4

Before the Cousins trade, I would have agreed with you, AD needs to play the five for the team to succeed. However, acquiring Cousins changes that. I know it's painful to watch AD or Cousins constantly setting up camp behind the arc, but I think once they develop chemistry or we get a new coach, those things will change.

He will never "exclusively" be a 4. The 12-14 mins Cousins is on the bench, he will play 5. And the Pels got Cousins, so I am fine with him at the 4 for the foreseeable future. But if Cousins doesn't get traded for pennies on the dollar or other teams step up their offer and the Pels miss out, they have Dwight right now and there is absolutely zero hope for their future

Then, AD leaves after a few years and blames the franchise for being incompetent, when he is a major part of the reason they traded for Asik and Howard in the first place

It's all fine now, but man, his unwillingness to play the 5 almost crippled the franchise

I get that. The issue to me is crunch time. I don't know if you can play Davis+Cousins at crunch time v the best teams. We saw this already in 20+ games.

If you're maxing out Cousins, he has to be playing in crunch time. Davis+Cousins max team team feels sort of Clipperish to me- good, but top heavy and somewhat ill-fitting on the court.

Maybe they can make it work- the skills appear to be there. And maybe the team doesn't care too much as long as they are consistently winning ~50 games. That's fine with me. Being Memphis level would be great.

I just don't see a Davis centered team being a legit title contender if he's not closing games at the 5. But I've been wrong before and will be wrong again. Hope they figure it out and turn the league on it's head

It's all going to come down to Cousins being able to defend better in space IMO

At crunch time, teams just put him in the P&R every possession and he got abused. But maybe his Achilles was bothering him and/or he was a bit outta shape

He improves there and they can be elite closing games together

With a healed Achilles - and those are a bitch - and losing 10-15 pounds I don't see why he couldn't be a solid defender in space without losing anything from his offensive game.

Seeing that Kobe mentored all these young superstars this past year makes me think...

Why the frick not give him a shot?

It would put asses in the seats, he gets TWO top tier players to build around. frick he could maybe make Jrue into a top guard!

2nd Coming of MJ :'(

Sources: The #Pelicans are retaining GM Dell Demps & coach Alvin Gentry to enter 2017-18 season.

Basically the Cousins trade saved Dell and Cousins liking Uncle Al got Gentry another year too.
