Monty Williams is known as a defensive coach, and the defense wasn't good with the Pelicans. I know this isn't a popular opinion... but it's possible the defense doesn't get any better, and may even get worse.

Monty regularly and rightly blamed defensive problems on failed offensive execution because it wouldn't allow them to set the defense. Obviously they can switch to a scheme that is terrible, like with Asik in the fold the team stopped packing the paint and leaving guys open for 3s as in years past, but if they do the same thing with better offensive execution they should improve at least a little. Not to mention a full year with Cole/Pondexter/Cunningham rather than Rivers/Salmons/Babbitt, if the defense doesn't improve at least a little then they made a mistake with whoever they hired for lead assistant.

I'm not saying Gentry starts the season on the hot seat, but short of an AD injury, there really is no excuse for excuses.

Are you really trying to say monty is a good defensive coach?

I'm not saying he's a good defensive coach. But he is a "defensive coach" like Gentry is an "offensive coach".

Now, he may have some better defensive players on this team than his teams of the past

Once Shawn Marion and Raja Bell left PHX, they were running on empty on defense. That doesn't excuse the poor team defense at all, but it provides some context. Same thing with his Clippers teams- going with young guys like Darius Miles, Odom, McInnis, Richardson, and Brand don't typically produce good defenses. Again, not excusing their performance, but some context is fair. It's one reason why Demps avoided the draft route. Sort of weird to accept that idea as legit, but slam Gentry for working with a very young roster. And again, there are serious questions about his ability to come up with a coherent defensive scheme.

But if Monty Williams couldn't produce a good defense with that group, I'm not sure Alvin Gentry will.

A =/= B. Monty had one good defense, one mediocre defense, and a bunch of lousy defenses. Monty's defensive reputation is largely built on 1 great year and a very slow pace. Like Gentry, youth and talent provide some context. But when you have Anthony Davis and Omer Asik for 65+ games and the team repeatedly looks lost on that end, there are some coaching issues.

Gentry's track record isn't great, but the hope has to be his experiences/failures have provided him some perspective and humility. Perhaps he is more willing to adjust his ideas to fit the roster and he is more willing to shed some ego in a way that a younger coach isn't.

I think Demps will be particularly attentive to improving the defense

I disagree. We're talking about a guy that sold the house and furniture to bring in Tyreke Evans.
