as far as a LIVE music capital, it's austin.

as far as selling more records and bigger pop names, it's NYC and LA.

Phish, the most successful touring act of the past 30 years, has headlined Madison Square Garden 15+ times- including NYE 1995,1997,1998,2002,2010,2011,and 2012.

Well you were discussing how Austin is the live music capital of the world

Well one of the largest grossing and followed live bands in the last 3 decades has played in Austin like once in 10+ years, and sells out NYC's biggest venue (which is bigger and more famous than any venue in Austin about a million times over) on the biggest night for live music in the year

That has to count for something, atleast as a good example of heady's argument

I mean all the super hip music badasses can pooh-pooh Phish all they want, but they are a high grossing live band with a massive cult-like following, and if we are arguing about areas with high music cultures/economies, then a band like that is a legitimate example to be tossed around

When I think capital I think who is from there...but I want to put in a vote for Detroit in the top 5 with Motown, Seger, Stevie Wonder, Eminem, White Stripes, tc

What's appealing about ATX isn't necessarily the historic or big venues but rather the number of shows per night. May not always been huge artists but its hard to walk around Austin on any given night and not hear several live music acts

But the answer is NYC

Yea..you werent arguing per capita. You were saying Austin had more venues PERIOD than NYC. Unfortunately, I left the phistards to take care of this argument while I was out tonight so needless to say it failed miserably on their behalf. My apologies to you.
