New Orleans has the history and certainly an impressive music scene on a local level and within certain genres. But in terms of drawing big acts and consistently great performers, as well as diversity, it falls behind New York, which also has a ton of history behind it. I would put New Orleans over Nashville, FWIW. Not sure about Austin, but its definitely not the music capital of 'the world.'

Austin brings in a lot more than just "dubstep and hipster stuff"

I know...that's just what I think of when I think of Austin. Maybe I have the wrong idea and need to go check it out again.

i'm not definitively saying Austin is the music capital of the world, but it's a great city for music and always has been.

Austin birthed SRV, than in itself is pretty noteworthy

Autin calls itself the "Live Music Capital of the World". That could be true, it's a town devoted to live music.

But I'd agree with NYC. It's just so huge, it has everything. But New Orleans has a very solid case.

Exactly and i'd say it's WAY behind on attracting nationally touring acts.

I go with NYC, hands down

Austin has more concerts happening every night of the week than New York does.

And more venues.

Sxsw is what bands from around the world flock to on a yearly basis for a reason.

It's still where a lot of non-country artists record their albums. They have the best studio musicians, as I understand it.

I've never been to Austin, but it sounds like they have a pretty good argument. Two music festivals and a great scene in a medium sized city.

ok?

That's great and all but it's NYC...and Austin

I honestly can barely even think of an all-time great band that has come out of Austin...like Stevie Ray Vaughn I guess? Spoon?

And it would take me a while to list all the ones that have come out of NYC. Like a long while.

Yea live music plays in Austin a lot and it's a hipster/indie/scenester mecca or whatever but it's really not in the same league as NYC, historically or even right now

I guess I'm talking about 2013.

Austin is the best live music city in the country no matter what you're into.

If we were talking historically... Paris, Berlin and Vienna have all had their moments.

New Orleans is pretty high up there by "modern" standards.

meh...maybe

I don't really have enough info to argue with you here and I'm not going to pretend like I do, but I would figure NYC is pretty legit in this category as well
