New Orleans has the history and certainly an impressive music scene on a local level and within certain genres. But in terms of drawing big acts and consistently great performers, as well as diversity, it falls behind New York, which also has a ton of history behind it. I would put New Orleans over Nashville, FWIW. Not sure about Austin, but its definitely not the music capital of 'the world.'
This. Maybe with some kinds of music, but with some of my favorite bands ("big" indie rock bands), NOLA gets passed over too many times.

the epicenter of creative arts for 2 weeks out of the year
and your argument for NYC is what exactly?
in 2013, anyone that knows anything about the music industry would know that austin is the live music capital of the US

Yea live music plays in Austin a lot and it's a hipster/indie/scenester mecca or whatever but it's really not in the same league as NYC,
have you ever been to NYC?

Uh oh, we'll never understand since we're not in the "industry"

Uh, let's think. EVERY single national and international touring act.
Madison Square Garden is the premier arena in the world for live music.

it all depends what criteria you're using. If we're talking recording industry (which is not insignificant), then of course Nashville wins. But in terms of history and diversity of local music, New Orleans wins.

Granted, I've never lived in NYC, but I live in Austin and it really is the place to be for live music. You don't have to agree. But I spend 4+ days a week going to shows and I honestly wouldn't want to be anywhere else.

Im not arguing that austin isnt a great musical city, it is, and there is a good chance it has one of the best "scenes" currently. But there is no way that they have more venues and shows than nyc. No way.

Plus you have to think genre-wise. Their respective alternative scenes may be even. NYC has a much better jazz/funk/jam band scene while Austin has country.

The blues scene is better, FWIW.
ETA: I meant better than the country scene.

I just pulled up my bands in town app and ran it for NYC, so of course it pulls based in my iTunes account and similar stuff, and it wouldn't account for jazz shows etc at small clubs, and there were over 150 bands playing in NYC tonight on a Wednesday. I'm sure there are at least 50 more of bands it isn't showing me.
Austin may have ACL and SXSW but night for night, NYC beats it

If people research a little, Memphis use to be the capital until Austin.... Hands down its Austin as the "music capital of the world"
