Lol gladly
Nola gets tons of points for being the birthplace of jazz, but easily, NYC, LA, Nashville and Austin are ahead of it. You could argue Nola squeezes into that 5th spot (and I may even agree myself) but its in no way a shoe-in top three

it all depends what criteria you're using. If we're talking recording industry (which is not insignificant), then of course Nashville wins.
Recording is very significant. It's a huge criteria of the music capital in my opinion.
I'm just looking at the music industry as a whole. As a born and raised New Orleans yat and someone who has lived in Nashville for 7 years, I will argue that music (as a whole) is bigger in Nashville than New Orleans. First off, the endless amount of recording studios, producers, labels, publication, promoters, and whatnot are far more significant in number than New Orleans. I can honestly say that there are more on Nashville's Music Row (16th-18th Avenue) than the entire city of New Orleans.

But in terms of history and diversity of local music, New Orleans wins.
History, I'll give you. Diversity. I disagree wholeheartedly. People who think Nashville is strictly country music haven't been around. Take Broadway out of the picture. Take Bourbon out of the picture.
Compare the rest of the two respective cities.
New Orleans: Bywater, Marigny, Uptown, Garden District, Mid City, and so on.
Nashville: Hillsboro, Church Street, West End, Midtown, East Nashville, 12 South, 8th and Melrose, Gulch, SoBro.
Nashville is much more diverse (musically) in my opinion. You'll walk in and hear an Indie/Electric Rock band, Next door will be a death metal band, next door will be a bluegrass jam band, next door will be a old style country band and so forth. I just never got that in New Orleans.

It exists in New Orleans as well absolutely

Just because you never got it, doesnt mean it isnt there.

I'm well aware that such bands as Down, MuteMath, Acid Bath exist. I actively searched them out when I grew up there. I just felt like the music scene in Nashville is more thriving, diverse and supported in my personal opinion.

New Orleans has thriving scenes in jazz, funk, rap, metal, alternative rock, and probably a few others.

This thread is pointless without data, so i did a simple google search "best city for live music in the US" (i know the OP said world but the argument has mainly been in the US)
So, here's the results based on the top searches.

They do in BR as well despite your amateur attempt at constant BR digs.

That's good to see. I have always thought that New Orleans was one of if not the best music towns in the world. I know LA and NYC are definitely hard to argue with, but New Orleans has always been known for having a diverse music scene. They have 4 music festivals a year that I can think of off the top of my head.

Lulz
Even if they did (which they don't) , BR doesn't have a centralized music center ala Frenchmen St

The fact that Memphis showed up in one of those searches makes me

Don't what?
Baton Rouge has tons of bands.
Get your head out of your arse

some of the arguing in here is silly.
i would imagine in pretty much every major city you can find any type of music to a certain extent. bigger cities=bigger name acts. i think thats what it basically boils down to. i only listen to electronic music but i would imagine its similar to other types of music with its relation to city size.
with my music, specifically drum and bass
baton rouge-1 monthly devoted to dnb and on random edm nights they might have a guy play a set of dnb.
new orleans-1 weekly and they will get a big name US dj every 2-3 months.
houston-1 to 2 weeklys and a big name every month or two. occasional guy from across the pond
nyc-2 weeklys and a big name every month. and the big names are usually world class people from the UK or somewhere not from the US

I honestly can barely even think of an all-time great band that has come out of Austin...like Stevie Ray Vaughn I guess? Spoon?
Spoon is, to be fair, quite awesome.

This. Those other cities are guaranteed to be stops on bands' tours. New Orleans has been hugely disappointing to me lately in terms of getting big acts to come here. Sure, the arena renovations probably don't help, but if the arena isn't available, is that it?
I already had to drive to Dallas this summer to see a concert that didn't get any closer, and I get to miss 3 of my favorites this fall thanks to school and the fact that the closest any of them get is Houston.

Im not arguing that austin isnt a great musical city, it is, and there is a good chance it has one of the best "scenes" currently. But there is no way that they have more venues and shows than nyc. No way.
Well of course not. Jesus titty-fricking Christ, NYC has like 9 million people and five boroughs....of course they have more venues.

I actually don't think LA has a great music scene. Or as great a music scene as it SHOULD have given its size.
