I am finding the show entertaining, but obviously not as much as last season. I think he may have overreached with such a convoluted plot and too many characters. As has been said before, there should be one less major character.
The biggest issue I'm having with the show is I have no real person or cause to identify with or root for, if that makes sense. The only person I remotely care for is CF. There's been too much runaround and empty scenes to propel the complicated plot line. I also agree, and worried prior to the release, that not having the same director as last season has made a difference. I really think the plot has potential for some crazy discoveries, but I think it needs to start revealing more. This isn't game of thrones where it can slow burn such a complicated scheme.
I'm hoping there's some forward movement, and I think it will pick up. I am still entertained for now, but the characters or victims need to provide a reason to care.

Way too much bandwagon hating going on. This season has a different battle rhythm to it. The opening scene was brilliant. colin farrell is singlehandedly caring this season. I swear season 1 was no where developed by episode 3. Episode 5 of last season was the episode that cemented the plot. Give this season 2 more episodes before you commit harakiri.

When gay cop bumped in to VV, made me wonder if VV has the gay too. Didn't his wife say he can't get it up?

I think the show is ok. Episode 3 was the best by far IMO.
The issue I have is similar to others. They are trying too hard to focus on character development and have abandoned the plot too much. There are 20 minute stretches that have nothing to do with the murders or Vinci. It’s absurd and ruins the pacing of the show.
Directing is trying to be too stylish and is completely abandoning substance. Writing is great in spurts and completely lost in others. They needed to spend about another year revising this script.
As far as the acting:
- Colin Farrell is pretty great. He pulls off his character and it’s a troubled character who is stuck somewhere between protagonist and villain. You root for him, but at the same time realize he’s a piece of shite.
- Vince Vaughn was bad at first, but I thought he has improved each episode. He is at the worst tolerable. Personally, I would give him a B-.
- McAdams is pretty bad, but she is hot so my little head blinds my big head and I look past it.
- Kitsch is atrocious. He cannot come close to pulling off the “brooding, repressed gay” that he is attempting. He is far and away the weak part of the show, both acting wise and character wise.
I will continue to watch and enjoy. I just hope the next season has better casting and writing. The overly-stylish directing can work well if the other things are in place. The downfall of this season, in addition to my stated issues, will undoubtedly be the shadow cast from Season 1, which was an all-time great television season.

Its been entertaining to me. But I am entertained easily.
I also think it is improving, with the exception of Kitsch. So that trend will keep me watching.

Completely agree. It continues to build and get better. It's not amazing but we'll see where it goes.

I feel like McAdams character is laughable and impossible to like. When she told Junior from Little Giants she would "kick his arse if she saw him again" I almost spit out my beer. She has no believability of a badass to me at all. She just reminds me of an emo teenager from high school

This is a pretty great summation of my feelings thus far, so thanks for typing it up
I'm not throwing in the towel on S2 yet as I think episode 3 was the best one yet, albeit (like another poster said) that's not saying much given the underwhelming feeling elicited by episodes 1 and 2.
Maybe, just maybe, NP heard the criticism of S1 somewhat "ending with a fizzle" and we'll get the just opposite in S2...

I just watched the first season this weekend and this season doesn't seem to be any more drawn out. It does require a little more attention to keep up, since it isn't being told through interviews like the first season. I think this will make for a better second half of the season, if it is all pulled together like it should be.

here's a question (may be a dumb one) about the next season. As people have mentioned in here, S1 was likely so tremendous bc it was this guy's life work that he put years and years into and he did it exactly his way....then with S2 he basically had to live up to it again on an extremely short (comparitively speaking) time frame. The network essentially said "great, now do it again and have it done by [X date]".
My question is, in situations like this why don't they just let the creative people take their tiem and just finish when they finish? Obviously, you can't give them COMPLETE freedom or it could be like 5 years between seasons. But take books for example. I don't read GOT but hasn't GRRM taken years and years between books? I'm sure the publsiher (and fans) would love to have each one come out on a fixed schedule, but he's like "nah, IDGAS. It'll be ready when it's ready". Is that kind of things not ever done with television?

Leveraging momentum from S1 to earn more money. Longer they wait, the more people forget about it and it loses viewer momentum.
There is a fine line though between getting it out quick enough to piggy back that momentum and too quick that it hurts quality.
