I've been watching so much heavy, drama filled stuff lately. This show was a nice change of pace. Something a little lighter than the crazy shite I usually watch.

Odds that Jeb Bush has jerked it to Melissa Benoist's Fappening photos? She totally won The Fappening.

No. It's more like the criticism itself. There's more to Superman than being some "overpowered" heavy hitter that just punches things.

He's an idea. And one of the greatest ideas to ever come out in the last 150 years. He's one of the greatest immigrant stories ever. He's an alien all alone with such incredible power that he could use to rule the world with if he wanted to but he lives like an average joe instead and uses it to help people and that's it. He's really alone with barely no one else like him except for a couple others and he constantly has distrustful governments plotting against him and he takes it in stride and stays in character. He's so powerful he's practically living in a world made of cardboard on this Earth and has to try like hell to restrain himself. Put simply, he's a model of character that humanity wishes it could be and tries to be that guy.

Read All Star Superman by Grant Morrison and get back to me. You'll have a different point of view of the character and why he's considered the the GOAT greatest Superhero of all time.

a far cry from Ally McBeal.

I like that they didn't spend a lot of unnecessary time building up to how she got to be who/what she is.

At first I thought the sister was just going to be a jealous bitch who Kara had to deal with the whole time.

The whole crashed prison thing is interesting. It doesn't give her much of a choice whether she wants to fight or not. They are coming for her.

Sentrius, IMHO, Superman is the toughest character to write a story for in any of the Comic Book universes.

Batman has always and will always be my favorite character. I've enjoyed all the movies, watched the animated series religiously as a kid, own the Adam West series, and hes by far been the most consistent of my comic reading over the years. Just picked up the Court of Owls New 52 arc. Batman is a character that you can write a ton of good stories for. Batman can be physical, Batman can be mental/psychological. You can write a Batman story where we beats Superman and make it believable, because the character has tremendous depth and skill.

Its hard, and I mean hard, to write a Superman story while overcoming the trope that hes an all-powerful alien. For example, if you put Batman in a pair of handcuffs about to fall into a bottomless pit, theres a million ways you can write Bruce getting out of it. With Clark, any attempt at ignoring that he can just break the cuffs is almost ridiculous.

Thats not to say Batman is above this trope. As much as I love the Adam West show, its a perfect example of this problem. In that show, Batman always has the appropriate tool in his utility belt for the exact moment he needs it. He might as well just say "Oh Tootles!" Or they have the conveniently labeled and named gadget. Who can forget "Hand me down the shark repellent Bat-Spray!"

Your post above is why I loved Man of Steel. For all the hate it got, its a great take on the problem of Superman. From the direction it appears they are going with BvS, it looks like they are going to expand on this idea that the only thing keeping Superman from making the world kneel before him is his good nature. (At least until Bruce has a chance to assemble his dossier)

Lets be honest: the reaction from the world upon seeing an all powerful flying alien is going to be much more like the Smallville fight in MoS than the look of awe and astonishment when he catches the helicopter falling off the Daily Planet in the 77 movie.

I would counter that by saying that Batman is paranoid and doesn't trust anyone.

Would one interpretation be that Superman is truly afraid of his own power?

I know he's a real favorite of yours, but I've got boxes full of comic books from the 60s to the 90s. I'm familiar with just about everything. I know that several interesting story arcs have been written with Superman in them, especially over the last couple decades as they've tried to make him more 'edgy' and relatable. But the absolute utter lameness of any comic book from the 70s or 80s that had Superman in it pretty much ruined him for me forever. They just bored me silly.

I think he's harder to write a solid story for when the writer is hamstrung by continuity and WB. Both not either/or.

WB won't let the property veer to far off from the traditional version and continuity forces Superman story writers to work within very constraining parameters.

It appears that the continuity issue is a thing of the past in the new DC universe but WB will always be there to closely monitor any writers that come along.

Btw, I'm a Batman fan through and through. I just don't think Superman is a boring/bland character at all. Hell, Sentrius wrote some of the best Superman I've read in quite a while.

Why was there a need for Jimmy Olson to wake up Black in this series? He has always been the red headed, freckled face, kid reporter. Social engineering has reached a new low by changing Jimmy, he is as much a fixture as Clark Kent.

I would guess that it is a rights issue, I think in the pilot they only show some red boots or something, don't remember off the top of my head. they never say his name so it might be a rights issue.

If they do have the right then they may have to pay to use his name versus getting the super girl name cheap.

Warner Brothers own D.C. and makes every single show that includes a D.C. character. They sell those shows to the various networks (CBS, Fox, and CW). So the creator of Supergirl owns Superman. It is not a right's issue. It is clearly a creative choice.

He's been so popular for so long that the character has been strip mined. That's why I always thought the way to go with Superman would be to have a movie about how the world would respond to him. How would the world respond if a super-being arrived and could solve so many problems? It looks like that is the direction they are heading in BvS.

BTW, I love Superman but Supergirl was awful. The pilot for Lois & Clark was much better.
