Athletes should be able to transfer

They absolutely should, and they should still have to sit out a year. No one wants to force kids to honor their commitment for 4 years at 18 years old, but it’s bullshite to allow instant transfers and combine it with the ability to openly bid for players via NIL.

The entire thing is stupid as frick and it’s almost like they’re intentionally trying to ruin college football in the same way they’ve ruined the NFL and a bunch of other classic American institutions.

If you really want to think about it, Burrow was a grad-transfer who never attended a class at LSU in person - did it all online from his apartment. He was a guy who came here to throw to NFL receivers as an audition to get a professional job - and it worked. College football is and always has been a minor league system for the NFL. I support opportunity and capitalism so go for it!

On the other hand, the allure of college athletics is the imagined bond with the athlete, “one of our kids” who represents us at our state institution. I can’t stand these countless posts “so-n-so QB is in the portal - let’s bring him in!”. I’d rather root for Nuss to go 9-3 than some dude I never heard of to go 10-2. That’s just me - I’m weird

I am not against players transferring but I agree NIL has changed the reasons for the transferring and it is out of control right now. It is also degrading the character of a lot of young men to stand by a commitment and battle for a position and overcome adversity. If you run from the challenges in life it will only make you weaker. But anyone who doesn't think the college game is heading the way of the NFL is in denial.

It’s a combo of it all for me. Greed has just stripped it down of all the things that made it great and unique. It’s soon going to be NFL Lite and in that case I may as well just watch the better product on Sundays

A coach can leave subject to contractual terms.

Yes, that often includes a payment because a coach leaves while still under contract as coaches are given multi year contracts.

Players are on one year contracts. If a player leaves, he forfeits his right to the remainder of his scholarship. It's the exact same thing.

Until players get multi year scholarships, they will win this argument in and out of court 10 times out of 10.

I disagree. TP isn't the problem. lack of NIL rules is the problem. Players wanting money instead of development.

If you eliminate the FA aspect of NIL+TP, then it would be fine. Some players need to move down to a lower level. Some need to move up. Some guys are getting screwed because the over valued themselves.

What we have is apples and oranges. Coaches are professionals in their field and have gone to school to earn the right to persue their profession

True

Athletes are students that are still learning their professional futures and receive benefits (scholarships, room and board, publicity, tutoring etc.).

So they aren’t professionals, but they are vehicles used by the universities to make money and they have been compensated to a certain extent for decades.

They are not professionals and that is where the lines get crossed.
The line has never been impenetrable. At one time players got an allowance. They have received room and board. Of course elaborate under the tables systems paid players. Market forces couldn’t be completely eliminated.

Are you going to pay a medical student as a doctor before he or she finishes school?

Don’t universities have better scholarships than others? Don’t they try to entice the best prospects?

This is the beginning of the end of college sports as we knew it. No loyalty, just a chase for the almighty dollar and they won’t be getting any of mine.

The end? No, but yes huge changes. Got the better? I don’t think so, but it isn’t because of the players. It’s because of the money.

Schools deciding to play big games off campus for a big check. Schools teeing it off at 11:00 am. Schools dropping their rivals, schools changing conferences, schools going all in for the big pay check. That’s what is wrecking the game.

I'll start watching DII or DIII ball. Those kids want to compete.

No it’s not.
then what IS the purpose of football?

The priority needs to be making the sport the most appealing for fans, not catering to players.

The players are the ones providing you entertainment. The players should be catered towards.

They are catered to.

I get the idea that they have a limited time to play, and should be rewarded for doing so while they can. But you do need to continue to try to appeal to the fans. Ultimately, that's what keeps spectator sports profitable.

Transfers made LSU National Champions in men’s football and baseball, and women’s basketball. It sounds great to me if you are an LSU fan.

LSU’s Administrators need to upgrade their NIL collectives to play the game better.

Transferring is great for sports. For decades, college coaches left for new opportunities and money before and after signing day. Why not?

NIL needs to be legislated properly with accountability.

Geaux Tigers!

The issue is no sit transfers combined with unregulated NIL. It’s free agency without guardrails, and the free agents are 18-22 kids who have not yet fully developed brains. It’s a circus.

There is zero logical reason you can give to force players to sit out a year just for changing schools.

Then they should return all NIL money and pay for the part of their education.

No one is forcing anyone to pay college athletes. That is a personal decision with risk involved. Stop crying
