I wish every dad/man had that mindset.

I don't really agree with everything he said. My son plays basketball, baseball and football. He has a stack of medals and trophys. He knows the meaning of them, but he likes that he was part of that team, no matter where they finshed. The older he has gotten the less he has cared aboout them. It has not affected him at all, he has always been a hard worker and knows that is what it takes to get better and win.

No shite. I got my first banquet trophy in 1976 at a Bonanza. This started in the early 70s. Don't remember this being such an outrage until recently.

You think the kids don't know the difference between a crappy little participation trophy and one for first place? It's a little momento that says "thanks for coming to practice and trying sometimes." It isn't any different than if they got a baseball or water bottle with the team name printed on it.

My dad always tells a story that when I was in Tee Ball that we lost every single game. And at our awards ceremony our coaches handed out like fricking 3 tiered 3 foot tall trophies.

I believe that kids should get something that they can keep and remember the team but it needs to stay small and not overdone. (Like my 3 foot trophy was haha)

It's good to have a token of the season. That is a long commitment for a kid. That's much different than last place medals at a weekend tournament.

Participation trophies aren't some new phenomenon. Are adults really thinking back to that as the moment they lost their mettle? I was on one winless team as a child. Yeah, hooray, we didn't get trophies, but that was the most dysfunctional, least formative sports experience I can remember. In my opinion, the value of the experience, good or bad, is outside of whatever little ceremony is at the end.

I agree.

People act as if there is something besides a good time to happen in early youth sports, like it actually MEANS something, it doesn't...win or lose. So get a reminder of a good time with friends. There are a large number of folks that don't even get a team pic of their kids team, just a pic of their kid to add to the shrine.

I don't know James Harrison, but if you want to build the character of a kid..there are like 10,000 ways to do it that are better than sports.

Parents that preach a win or else attitude make me wonder why they care so much about lil Johnny and his tee ball team. As kids get older, and the better athletes start separating themselves, you see many many many individual awards that are given for performance, not participation.

He also said he wouldn't piss on Goodell if he was burning alive. Harrison always has my vote.

The issue to me is more about it devaluing the accomplishments of the teams and kids that actually worked the hardest and did the best. The whole reason you bust your arse all year is because you want to receive that trophy and moment at the end of the year. But now you've got to deal with every kid from every team walking up to get their trophy?

If you want to give them awards for best effort, most improved, sportsmanship, etc....fine. But simply getting a trophy for showing up is bullshite.

Agree ... if it's a tee-ball or soccer team that has simply been crushed every game ... there's no way any kid on that team should get jack shite.

For many years now ... we've banned "participation" trophies in our house. For the trophies my sons do have ... they really appreciate those.

Guarantee your son will be a major leaguer now

Participation Trophies have been around for over 40 years. I would say 99% of all pro athletes had participation trophies, including dad of the year Harrison

No ... none of them will be a pro in any sport.

It's not in the genetics.

But ... they will understand that in REAL frickING LIFE ... YOU DON'T GET JACK shite FOR SIMPLY SHOWING UP. And you sure as hell don't get anything if you get crushed by the competition.

And ... that attitude of "I showed up ... give me something ... I may have not tried and have added absolutely ZERO ... give me something" ... is part of what is ruining this country.

Participation Kid (the zero that stood there) ... later in life:

"Give me a raise."

Boss: "What for?"

PT Kid: "I show up every day on time."

Boss: "And? Those are the minimum requirements to even be employed here."

PT Kid: "No trophy?"

They are allowed to have individual merit trophies (MVP and such) ... or, if the team legitimately finishes in the Top 3.

But ... if it's a team that doesn't win a single game ... no fricking way any trophy associated with that will be in our house. It's like celebrating losing...F THAT.

agreed. when i was younger, our "participaton" trophies were something like this. if we won a special award or won something of consequence, we got something better. I really don't know why people have a problem with giving kids a momento like a 6 inch trophy.

what 8 year old do you know "busts his arse all year." they're children for christ's sake. they play sports to hang out with their friends. it's not like young children are putting in extra hours in the cage to win a title. and if they are, it's because they have parents that make them

True. We should make every effort to see that those kids feel like the worthless pieces of shite that they really are.

You're vastly overstating the value of a little piece of shiny plastic. Kids know when they win or lose. They don't look at that trophy and think, "We were champions that year".
