Is getting a participation trophy at 8 years old really that big of a deal? I never really cared about them and neither did anyone else I knew.

It's not that big of a deal. But James Harrison will be put on a pedestal for his "parenting skills".

No, it makes no difference until they get older, like 12-13 according to the studies. But then it makes them lazy, fat and entitled.

You mean the state that is 43% larger than any other state in the US? The state that is responsible for 12% of the US population?

I'll never understand why y'all get so mad about participation trophies. It honestly means nothing.

Agreed. That said, I'm also not sure why they're given out.

It's funny that some parents think that participation trophies and not keeping score makes a difference. Kids know when they suck and when they're getting their arse beat.

They're given out to 5-10 year olds because they have a season ending party and the parents think it'll be nice for the kids. It's not going to turn your kid into a pussy or make them complacent. We just have some really insecure people here.

Yep. The Super Bowl losers get paid actual cash money and the Colts just hung up a banner with "AFC Finalists" on it, for Christ's sake and I'm supposed to get bent out of shape because some third graders somewhere get a cheap trophy?

Agreed, although I also think parents do it for themselves. It's just easier to say "nobody won, we didn't keep score" than try to explain to your kid why his team sucks.

eh, most kids at that age are playing for fun or because their parents are making them, not because they really care about winning or losing. more than half those kids won't be playing sports past the age of 12 or 13 anyways, so why not let them enjoy their childhood a little bit. it's not like the kids who weren't good were unaware of that.

I don't care about this, but it would be sort of ironic if his kids become druggies and end up in jail and they tell the therapist it all started when their dad wouldn't let them have participation trophies.

Also, people want to act like this just started happening and contributes to the "pussification of America". When it actually started happening a really long time ago.

This. I always hear about "kids nowadays" getting participation trophies, but meanwhile I'm 30 and have a t-ball participation trophy from 25 years ago when I was 5.

Let's not act like this is a modern phenomenon.

Let's also not forget that it was James fricking Harrison who refused to go to the White House visit after winning the Super Bowl because "the president wouldn't have invited us there if we'd lost". Yes, this is the intelligent gentleman who is suddenly the parenting authority.

Harrison's family was attacked by his pit bull if I remember correctly. Personally I believe the guy to be nuttier than a squirrel turd.

No one wants a participation trophy.
