Yet half the guys on the winning team contributed nothing.

Relegation should be in all pro sports as well, not just European soccer #teamharrison

Wrong. As many have stated previously in this thread, this is not a new phenomenon by any stretch of the imagination.

What has begun is an over emphasis on and a competitive nature in youth sports.

Dad won't let you have a trophy cause you are a loser. All the while Johnny doesn't make his bed, take out the trash or mow the grass. Mommy gets pissed at any teacher that dare correct the little prince. Then Daddy says a five inch trophy is what is frickin up the world.

Tee ball has league winners now?

When I was a kid, our soccer leagues (the city league, not travel or competitive ball) had trophies for first and second place. I think the other kids got a ribbon or something, but no trophy.

I never even got second place trophies when I played sports growing up. You win you deserve one. If you don't then tough shite get better and win it next time.

If there is no message, then what do they need a trophy for? A trophy is a representation of an ACCOMPLISHMENT.

you mean like all the high school kids that get letters in sports for merely participating in games? what a bunch of pussies our society has turned into the last 80 years, rabble rabble

Kids in college are exhibiting much higher rates of depression, their parents are handling discussions with professors and even bosses, etc...all because kids don't know that it's possible to fail. They can't handle it because they've never had to.

It's a recent phenomena.

Many are also willingly signing student loans (perhaps having Mommy and Daddy co-sign) ... and then not wanting to pay it back.

You realize those articles are about parenting. Think Todd Marinovich and his daddy telling the world how special he is.......not a medal given to everyone. Participation trophies are the definition of sameness.

No. There are people in this very thread commenting about how they'd received them decades ago, as I did, myself (early 90s).

So you think those who have that parenting style (all kids, especially mine, are special) hasn't driven the increase in things like "participation trophies"? That is a manifestation of the mindset.

No, that is silly.

Getting something that EVERYONE gets is not special.

sports are lessons in sameness, that is why everyone wears the same uniform.

No, the being treated like a special little present to the world mentality is in the home. More prevalent with single moms and over competitive dads that think trophies or medals MATTER.

They used to matter, until everyone started getting one.

I would argue that jerseys are functional, so you know who the hell to pass the ball to, than they are some deeper representation of "we're all the same".

Why does everyone that merely plays x number of games in high school sports get a letter? And this has been going on for generations. This something that they would wear proudly around town as if they earned something by signing up to be on the team

A letter is a great example actually, so thank you for bringing it up. You needed to actually make the team (an accomplishment in itself) and play a certain number of games.

Now, that may be different now if anyone who wants to join the team makes it and anyone who is on the team gets a letter. I'm not ok with the latter, but am with the former (again, because the former represents an accomplishment...hard work paying off).
