I would argue that jerseys are functional, so you know who the hell to pass the ball to, than they are some deeper representation of "we're all the same".

Sayings like "There's no 'I' in TEAM" used to go along with this.

On your little league uniform, you simply had the sponsor's name on the front and a number on the back.

Now ... you have to pay extra, so that every little kid can have his last name on the back of his "True Value" (or insert sponsor name) team jersey.

LOOK AT ME! ME! ME! POST ME ON FACEBOOK! LOOK AT MY TROPHY!

I am not that old ... but, what the heck ... Get off my lawn. blah blah blah

Our coaches were tough on us, even in little league and pee wee. Parents were not even allowed at the fricking practice.

And ... you 1990 folks and younger ... get this ... we typically rode this thing called a "bicycle" to and from practice. We didn't have mommy and daddy chauffering us and our trophies around, wiping off the juice from orange wedges and Capri Suns, a reward for standing in the outfield and picking your nose.

One of my best friend's Dad was our baseball coach. He worked for the phone company by day. With us, he demanded hard work, discipline, and respect. He demanded effort and the desire to improve. He once made us run around the field after a loss with our parents watching.

The thing I remember most ... is the joy of winning a big game ... and Coach buying us all a Coke from the concession stands with his own money and telling us that we played well.

Felt better than getting some piece of shite trophy that everyone else got anyway.

Hard to ride a bike when you're traveling around the country every weekend and playing 3x as many games as you did when you were a kid. Sports are infinitely more competitive now and the last 15 years than when you were a kid. So kindly stfu about walking up hill to and from practice in 4 feet of snow.

I don't think those competitive travel leagues (which have serious problems with injuring and burning kids out) give participation trophies.

I still fail to see what you think the problem is giving a trophy to a 6 year old playing T ball.

I don't agree with giving a kid who just showed up the same thing as a kid whose team won the league. I'm not saying you punish the kid who just showed up, but you give the kid whose team won the thing a little something.

I disagree. Kids also need to learn the fine art of riding someone else's coat tails...and those that do should be rewarded as such.

We're talking about children. We're talking about leagues that have inning run limits because rarely are they able to record 3 outs in an inning. We're talking about kids so young they barely know what's going on. We're talking about kids so young they haven't developed a competitive streak yet. I'm not sure the last time you went to a game played by children, but it is a very loose interpretation of an organized sport. A 3 inch trophy as a memento from a good time is hardly coddling a child or a detriment on teaching them what it takes to win down the road.

Not only is it a deterrent, it teaches them you never have to perform.

We have All Stsrs for tball! The biggest indicator for success is a favorable birthday. Born on 4/30 you are are playing as the year up. 5/1. The year down. One full year is a ton at that age. No Amt of work or dedication will overcome that generally.

I say we shame their asses

generally, in my experience in the early 90s at least, the kids who won tournaments or titles or individual awards got extra trophies, in addition to the small trophies everyone got. some of you ITT are acting as if kids are getting trophies that say "champions" on them or something even if they finished last. me personally for youth baseball when i was really young, i got a trophy for being on the team and then i got another trophy for a gold glove or whatever, and then my team got more trophies for wining the city title in our league. and i got some other trophy or medal for leading my team in batting average. there's also a big difference, imo, between giving a kid a trophy and taking a trophy away he was given. given harrison's kid was 6, i just think that's him being an a-hole, especially dragging his kid into the national media over it. and sorry, but i'm not one to applaud many thing a guy like him does

Also, people want to act like this just started happening and contributes to the "pussification of America". When it actually started happening a really long time ago.

As a child of the seventies, I cannot ever remember a single award being given just for showing up. I feel sorry for the generations of pussies that have come along since then being told how wonderful and special their failures are.

All TWO of them?

If they are proud of their 11th place finish in a field of 15 and they want their kids to also take pride in failure then I would call them pussies too.
