Way to lay down the law, man. Really. By golly, you're gonna fix America, one discarded trophy at a time. I mean, your kids are going to hate you, but the rest of the country will love you when you single-handedly eliminate the need for a welfare system.

I'm in the business of raising men, not entitled little pussies who have always gotten something for nothing ... and business is damn good.

Harrison is SPOT ON.

Perhaps others should get with the program as well.

And, last but not least ... you may kindly GFY, prick.

For many years now ... we've banned "participation" trophies in our house. For the trophies my sons do have ... they really appreciate those.
good lord dude. I'm sure your kids are so much better off for not getting to keep a dumpy little trophy. I can't believe people actually think these things make a difference.

Real life you don't get jack shite right. Well guess what, t ball is not real life.

Back in the day five year olds were up at crack of dawn slipping hogs, milking goats and burying their mama when she was 33.

Give me a goddamn break. I tell my kids good job, a participation award is like a permanent good job.

So what if your kid sucks but they win the league, you just let the little bastard ride his teams coat tails.

Way to produce a slacker.

how is a tiny little participation trophy doing that?

What is the message you're trying to send with the participation trophy?

This site is pure entertainment every time I visit. Some good points sprinkled in between cultural differences. There is no guide to parenting. Folks simply remember the days of old and try to tweak bad rearing memories and harness and recycle good ones.

I am, personally, a disciplinarian who feels my job is to raise my children to know right from wrong, be compassionate, helpful, and well mannered while being fearless. Friendship should occur closer to or well into adulthood.

Jesus Christ there was no freaking message. In 1992 we would go to Gattis and stuff our faces with pizza and get a shitty trophy.

What message? That they had fun and were part of a group. Only a mentally challenged child would think they won the league when they didn't, I get my kids things to remember vacations too.

Let's see James Harrison has beat his girlfriend, had his pit bull attack his kid, and been disrespectful to his President, his teammates, and others.

I will happily parent in a 180 degree difference than that sociopath

There is no message. they are fricking 8 years old and 99.9% of them don't care about winning or losing and they are playing for the fun of it. Jesus. They are 8 fricking years old. You can teach kids the value of competition while also pointing out that you don't have to win to enjoy athletic competition

I have to say, it's become RARE that I read posts on this board that make me think, "Huh...well that's taken idiotic to a whole new and surprising level for this board."

So, congrats...here's your trophy.

Don't worry...it's for 1st place, so you can keep it.

Right. You can also reward them for putting in a season's worth of good effort for going to & participating in (gasp!) practice, games, team functions, etc. It's not always easy getting kids that age to do those things. A little something to commemorate the experience might actually help them sustain the memories and lessons learned.

Unless it's some grandiose thing, this is all these things are...a token, a bobble...a fricking piece of memorabilia to stand next to the team photo of that season...that they will almost certainly end up tossing out later in life. but for a few years when they're still just kids, having that little thing is just a tangible thing to glance at and help remember a short time in their lives.

Never mind...I forgot...

If there is no message, then what do they need a trophy for? A trophy is a representation of an ACCOMPLISHMENT.

Playing a season of swarm ball is not an accomplishment. The kids who won the league accomplished something. I would hope that if my kid wasn't on the winning team, he saw how fun going up on stage and getting a trophy and getting recognized was...and wanted to practice hard to hopefully be there himself next season.

You guys realize that the whole "entitlement generation" is a real thing, and this is contributing? Kids in college are exhibiting much higher rates of depression, their parents are handling discussions with professors and even bosses, etc...all because kids don't know that it's possible to fail. They can't handle it because they've never had to.

Simple fact, every one is not special, everyone is not a winner. It needs to be learned at some point.

Trophies, trophies we pay people for just breathing and we worried about trophies.
