Exactly!
Also, people want to act like this just started happening and contributes to the "pussification of America". When it actually started happening a really long time ago.
I was going to say, I got a participation trophy for tee ball. Almost 30 years ago.
The issue has never been the trophy. It's always been the parents who don't teach their children the difference between a participation trophy and a trophy you've earned through specific achievements. Good on Harrison for teaching his kids the difference, but he could've done it without taking away their trophies.

It's not "nothing". We have raised generations of kids that have been prevented from experiencing any negative circumstance in life.
The real question is: why are liberals so vested in this type of parenting/child rearing?
I love how this immediately becomes a liberal/conservative conversation. When it literally has nothing to do with the conversation.
Also, it's an exaggeration that an entire generation of kids are growing up in an environment where they are all receiving participation trophies. This isn't as a big a deal as so many people are trying to make it seem.

quote:Agreed, the physical trophy means absolutely nothing. It all goes back to whether or not the parents teach kids to value competition and reaching goals. I think Harrison had the right mindset on this issue. But is execution was complete garbage. Especially since he posted this on instagram.

This movement has apparently spiraled out of control. “Preschoolers sometimes now sing a song to the tune of ‘Frère Jacques’ that goes like this, ‘I am special I am special look at me look at me,'” according to San Diego State University professor Jean Twenge.
This push to make every child feel special leads to problems in college. A study highlighted in Goldberg’s report shows that a third of college students say they deserve a B grade as long as they attend most classes in a course.
Dr. Robert Cloninger, professor of psychiatry at Washington University in St. Louis School of Medicine has been studying the effects of rewards with rats in mazes. He found that rats that received food just for working their way through the maze were lazy. “They will not be fast runners to get to the trophy, and they will quit easily the moment they are no longer getting rewarded.”

This culture arises out of a movement beginning in the late 20th Century to push the importance of self-esteem in education. “The state of California had a task force in the 1980s to study self-esteem, and we thought especially for kids in struggling communities if we just told them they were great, they would believe it, and then they could achieve more because they were certain they were great,” said researcher Ashley Merryman.
Thanks California.

Besides the statement being wrong, this is simply not possible.
Bad shite happens to people.

And here we go. Of course.

You mean the state that produces the most professional athletes and Olympic medalists and dominates youth sports?

Got to love the Internet, though, where once he is on "our side", James fricking Harrison becomes the leading authority on proper parenting and mentoring.

I'll never understand why y'all get so mad about participation trophies. It honestly means nothing.
I'm 31 and we always got them until 10 or so. But even in those years I appreciated the trophies we got for winning the league or making state more than the others.
I like the concept here, but I think the actual issue is overstated.

With a population of 40 million, you should be doing more.

I can remember playing youth soccer and our team never received trophies [I'm 26 years old]. But other teams in our division did.

We are all a bunch of self-entitled, spoiled, "special little snowflakes".
Buncha useless fricks if you ask me.

How could there possibly be more done when it's already the top?

Truth. My dad was so right wing, he probably had a tatoo of Reagan on his dick(no pics) and my teeball team that he coached still got trophies for fouth place over 30 years ago.
I remember getting the trophy and not giving a shite about it because I really wanted first place. My teammates felt the same way.
This isn't a right/left wing issue, it isn't a recent trend nor is it a big deal.

That's a pretty stupid thing to do. It's just a trophy, let the kid have it.
Posted on 8/16/15 at 1:30 pm to TechDawg2007
I remember some time in college throwing out all of my trophies and only saving the ones that meant something to me. It went from about 50 to 5. It really is amazing how many stupid trophies they hand out to kids.

Good. He is setting an example for all of these pussy arse parents who Breast feed their kids until their 21

Just became a James Harrison fan.

Is getting a participation trophy at 8 years old really that big of a deal? I never really cared about them and neither did anyone else I knew.
