I'm down with this.

We could make bets on which athletes die of heat exhaustion during some of the long events.

Put me down for Almaty. Been there a few times for work.

Its a beautiful part of the world, but difficult to reach.

I always say it is like the Star Wars cantina, as you go into a bar there, and it is ethnic Russians drinking with Iranians, while the Chinese are there talking to Mongolians, with the Pakistanis, etc, etc.

The women there are beautiful also.

I am sure some people will object, but there is a lot of horse meat eaten there.

The mountains around the city are easily accessible and a bigger version of the Rockies.

They were invited to submit a bid by the USOC for 2024 but apparently declined.

You would need to do a lot of work. There are some facilities in place - the Superdome, the New Orleans Arena, the Lakefront Arena, City Park, you could use some of the facilities LSU has in Baton Rouge - but a lot of that would have to be remodeled and that's not counting the new facilities that would need to be built.

You would need to dramatically upgrade the transportation infrastructure. You would need more hotel rooms. You would need to find a place for an Olympic village. And you would probably have to hold the Olympics in April instead of August to avoid the peak of hurricane season. And that's on the hope that there isn't a hurricane in August 2023 that tears up a bunch of your facilities.

Conceivably we could pull it off but we're nowhere near ready.

Other than being insanely humid, Houston would be a good fit in my opinion. It would give them a reason to do something with the Astrodome. Minimal amount of sports facilities would need to be built. Track would be the one that'd be tough as I'm not sure if NRG Stadium can be configured to fit a track. Between Toyota Center, BBVA, Minute Maid, Hoffheinz PAvillion, TDECU Stadium, NRG Arena and NRG Center pretty much everything could be hosted. Some of the water events like kayaking would be moved to the hill country.

What do you do with an Olympic Natatorium after the Olympics? Might as well tear it down or turn it into a shopping mall.

The Olympic just need to pick 4 cities for the summer games and 4 cities for the winter games and rotate accordingly.

Or maybe 5 each.

Facilities could be reused, infrastructure is in place, cities could also host intermediate events.

OR, you do what the Chinese did and turn it into an indoor water park.

Frick China.

I would like to see the Winter Olympics back in Northern Europe, Canada, or the U.S. Get the Winter Olympics back to what it used to be, away from the big cities hosting and back to the smaller ski towns.

Right. Beaver Creek was specifically developed to host most of the skiing events. Like i said, taxpayers dont want to pay for that crap.

Also, IIRC, the visa situation for Kazakhstan is prohibitively expensive.

The President of Kazakhstan is basically a dictator it appears who has been in office since before the Soviet collapse. I imagine the visa rules could be rewritten over afternoon horsemeat.

I went on that downhill run a few years ago. 8 degrees and sunny, top half was ice. I was scared shitless and putted down very slowly

New Orleans isn't big enough to host an event the size and duration of the Olympics and it is too close to the Gulf anf like you said that is the peak of hurricane season. NOLA however would be an awesome host site for a world cup when Russia and Quatar are stripped of their hosting rights. The only problem is the Superdome has turf and I doubt that FIFA would want the World Cup played on turf, but I am sure we could rig up some kind of light system to allow for a temporary grass field.

The only American cities that could pull off hosting a summer games would be ATL, Dallas and North Texas area, LA, the Bay Area, Chicago and NYC. Houston is big enough but like NOLA it is too close to the gulf and the threat of hurricanes ruins its chances same goes for Miami.

ETA: Philly and Boston

I'd put Philadelphia on the list of "cities capable of hosting".
