The one thing I didn't see mentioned in the responses is not saving for retirement.

For instance, my wife and I put money towards 401k, and ROTHs.

Those ROTHs fully maxed are $11,000 a year.

Life would be pretty "easy" in the short term if I wasn't putting that away, along with savings that go beyond that.

No. Household.

Think nursing manager at the lake making $65k and a PE at one of the engineering firms making $85k

I feel like the things in the OP require a higher number.

We are nowhere close to being able to afford that many things and our household income isn't that far off

as been mentioned, family money.

What I have a hard time getting is why don't these people with 3 or more kids just move to a area with great schools? Sure it would mean probably leaving the state but how much would it save in a year for 3 kids? 20k? I just couldn't get over losing that money when it could be put to use in other places.

I can only speak for my family but our kids would be going to private school no matter the quality of public.

That makes very little sense unless it is for religious reasons.

Mine as well. We've got one graduated, one graduating in May and a freshman. Not one penny was paid for by "family money" i.e. Grandparents. We've paid for it all but if you'd see our district you'd understand why.

We're not particularly concerned about what we drive (safe, reliable but we're not trying to keep up with anyone), we go on vacations but they're not super lavish but the kids are happy and we're just in general not trying to keep up with anyone in any area.

That is part of it and I wouldn't expect it to make sense to everyone.

If you figure $7k-$12k per yr per kid for private school tuition the numbers get pretty high for 13 yr's of school (before you save a penny for college or retirement). We have 3 kids and are planning to leave LA this yr for another state and education is a big factor in our decision. I just cannot get past spending $300k-$400k on private school when we can just go somewhere else.

Well ours isn't quite that much. I don't even want to know what we've spent; I can tell you the check I wrote this year is for the upper amount that you just posted BUT it was for 2 kids.

We do fully fund our ROTH and either SEP or IRA depending on which our accountant tells us we're eligible for.

If I ever get married and have kids, they're going public school. Not wasting money on that while I can eat out, go to Hawaii or Bora Bora, and get cool stuff.

I guess social scene is a factor too for some people in this thread.

It was an example to get to $150k. I know they can, and often do, make more.

And I feel like it would require 1/2 that. Of course it depends on what you mean by "private" schools. The local parochial school is one thing, an Episcopal school is another. I could put all my kids through their current school for the price of one at McGehee for instance.

Those numbers can be on the low end. There are a bunch of schools in Dallas that are in the $20-30k range (St. Mark's, ESD, Greenhill, etc.).

If those are your priorities then that's what you should do
