You have Notre Dame (if they finally get it together), Southern California, and Ohio State as the "very good but not excellent" teams that are going to end every year at 11-1 or 10-2 because they have no one to challenge them.

The legitimate top 5 programs in no particular order
Florida
LSU
Alabama
Miami
Texas

It's not all about Depth, Coaching is a bigger reason IMO. And Any teams 3rd string QB has nothing to do with the success of their program.

It's in Saban's nature to build teams, not to sustain them

Says who? He made LSU an SEC champion in two years. He lost some of the best players from that team, then won a national title two years later with his first GREAT recruiting class. The majority of the guys he first recruited were gone, then he went 9-3. That 9-3 team was 1 point away from beating 14-0 Auburn, and one play away from beating Iowa. He built AND sustained LSU. LSU from 2005-2007 is him sustaining the program.

You dont think depth is the lifeblood of a top 5 program?

I have Oklahoma over Miami because I think OU will outrecruit Miami and how long will Miami stay off of probation? If the past is any gauge, not long!

Really?

LSU 2007
Starting QB - Matt Flynn
Backup QB - Ryan Perilloux
3rd string QB - Jarrett Lee

I think depth is at every position, but qb is where it is least needed.
One good starter and a solid backup qb is all you need. Not saying that having 4 good ones on scolly isn't preferred, but saying a 3rd will solidify a program seems a bit far-fetched to me.

Based on recruiting strength (which is all you can go by 3 years from now) I have it as...

1. UF (4.10)
2. USC (4.08)
3. Bama (4.07)
4. LSU (4.05)
5. UT (3.89)
OSU (3.89)
ND (3.89)

I'm talking on a year to year basis, and Perilloux fricked it up by leaving

Two flaws in your logic. That team LOST to Auburn and LOST to Iowa. No matter how close those losses were, they exist.

I'm really tiring of hearing this. I give Saban all the credit in the world for providing the tools for success, but it takes a good coach to utilize that talent. Miles won with those players in 2005, 2006, and 2007. Saban was in Miami. He didn't sustain crap.

Note that I'm not arguing that he CAN'T maintain programs after building them, just that he leaves before faced with that challenge.

The problem with this logic is that this is college football. Every 3rd- string quarterback is 2-3 years away from being the starter.

Yeah, the reason I didn't include USC was Petey Carroll, one of the most overrated coaches in NCAA history. Something like 6 of the last 7 years, he has lost to a team not even ranked during the season.

I'm just saying, you only need to have 2 ready to play in one year, if you recruit well and develop them in those 2-3 years they will be ready. You only need 2 solid ones to be successful in one year, while the other ones develop.
