Granted what Chavis has done with all of the miserable offenses we've had has been impressive. Since last season, LSU has given up last minute scoring drives to the following teams:
Texas A&M
South Carolina
Alabama
Arkansas came awfully close
Clemson
Georgia
Ole Miss

This is an obvious problem. I'm not sure what the coaches are calling during these last possessions, but something needs to change here.

Chavis hasn't shown the ability to consistently defend against teams who run spread offenses. It's not just this season, it's been a trend now for the past few years.

I don't agree with you.

This is in fact a real problem. The UCSe and A&M games were two score games so that kind of masked things there but it put us in a 'recover the on-sides kick or else.'

ETA: would love to Hanigriff, et al weigh-in on this.

The problem is not scheme at LSU. It's the attitude from the top. What makes Saban, Meyer, Payton, Parcells, and others great is the attitude, and sense of urgency.

LSU hasn't had that since the Saban upperclassman left.

You guys wait a year when we have much better talent, and Chavis defense is still getting skull fricked. Keep making excuses for him.

Last minute scoring drives.....

Does this have nothing to do with the players? The only one I will put on Chavis was Bama last year... He got outsmarted. But the rest is just as much on the players than him. He plays zone not to get beat deep can't fault him for lack of pass rush or piss poor tackling. You can't make players give 100 percent effort. That's the real problem with this team ask moffitt

My problem is that he seems to get scared and go into that mode....
he was aggressive against Bama, except for the last drive and it cost us the game.

he would do that at TN..that was his demise.

These players have talent. Maybe not as talented as the guys in the past but they are talented. One thing I have noticed with Saban is that he coaches his players to become great players. Look what he did at LSU and did at Bama. In his second year at both schools he was in the SEC champ game with "talent" from the previous coaching staff.

Les got there in his first year. I guess he's the better coach.

GET RID OF STUD. He is a below average OL coach. I'm not even getting into his recruiting efforts.

Stud the Dud should have been shown the door when Crowton left. When a coach will play T-Bob Hebert over Lonergan, you know you have a problem.

The problem is not scheme

Riiiii.....wrong. Chavis scheme looks great when he has outstanding athletes in the front 7. That isn't the case this season.

The problem that's happening right now is that Chavis is still running the same scheme without the athletes especially at pass rusher. Playing zone coverage without a pass rush is slow, smothering death even against an average QB.

Good receivers will find the creases in zone coverage & exploit them. The only way a defense can prevent that is to get pressure on the quarterback. This can still be accomplished even when dropping 7 into coverage.

Chavis has displayed a lack of creativity on 3rd down & his blitz packages. The only blitz he seems to use is Jalen Mills coming off of the slot receiver. Its predictable as hell.

The defense would stand a better chance getting off the field on 3rd down if Chavis would get creative in his presnap disguises as well develop some creative single LB, safety or CB instead of just blitzing the slot corner.

A good coach can make his players put forth 100% effort, especially when the game is on the line.

When the problem is this consistent, it is a coaching issue. For the past 2 seasons, we have been absolutely unable to stop an offense from driving down the field and scoring in the final minutes. Even if it is the players, why haven't the coaches done anything about it? They obviously haven't tried to fix it. It's the same soft coverage, give up 8-10 yards per play letting the offense systematically drive down the field with ease.

Yes, the defense has been consistently suspect -- especially late in games -- since the final drive of the Bama game last season. Ole Miss 2012, Arkansas 2012, Clemson 2012, and every game this season against teams with viable offenses.
