Taking my first trip to Oxford on 9-30.

Looking for a rundown from those of you who go often on the must sees, must dos, parking, best time to get there, best eating spots, etc.

Edit: now that it’s game week and we know kick off is at 5, what time do you recommend getting to Oxford, and what is your normal Oxford routine? Any must see joints? Thanks and Geaux Tigers!

I have generally parked at the Cadence Bank on S Lamar Blvd. It is across the street from the infamous gas station with CEO's chicken on a stick and convenient to The Square.

The Grove is a great time. Enjoy. Other than LSU tailgating as the best in the country. I like The Grove as second place for me.

Grove is a great experience, fans are nice and engaging.

The high school stadium experience, however, is horrendous with obnoxious fans.

Oxford is great, but I think the Grove is wildly overrated.

The city has done a masterful job at marketing the grove as something special. Its nice, and Oxford is nice but the grove is nothing special. No on sight cooking is a crappy rule. The kids have a good time but the setups are really close together which leads to some conflict. There are a lot of stuffy gray hairs and their gray hairs are not like south LA gray hairs.
A shite ton of tailgates are set up a catered by third party vendors. It feels really generic.

Its a really nice town and you will have a good time but the grove is nothing special.

Agreed 100%, you won't find folks in Baton Rouge or even other SEC tailgates that keep padlocks on their ice chests.

It’s fine. Although I would say gameday weekends are logistically just the worst times in town . I hate living here on big gameday weekends

Especially when an lsu rolls in the population balloons up and there just aren’t enough places to eat or bars to go to to handle it all

Every restaurant is max capacity and super long waits

Bars mostly have cover ( avoid the library.. god knows they’ll be charging $60+) but there are some that won’t , except they will all be standing room/ one in-one out entrance .

A “hidden” gem that I go to in town often is the penny bar, underneath moes on the square. Divey bar with the best AC in town haha. Mostly locals and older population . Bartenders are all great and super nice . Good people down there

EDIT: I totally forgot about the new brewery in town Circle and square Brewery. Been open a few weeks . It’s right across Jackson Avenue by the square from the courtyard Marriott .
I am going tonight for the first time on a date and have high hopes as we needed a place like this in town

May be something y’all would be interested in as it’s something different than the bars.

As far as the grove, I don’t like to be packed in like that and the people I tailgate with are the ones I sit with at the game .

Call me antisocial I guess, the grove has never really been my thing.

Make sure you aren’t Making a spectacle with your beverages in the grove. Keep it in the red solo cups and don’t be carrying a case of beer on your shoulder . Keep it in coolers and pour it stealthily in case a cop decides to make an example out of you and make you pour them out on the ground

Yes it’s dumb but you won’t be the first nor the last penalized by a cop protecting and serving in that patch of grass

Enjoy the scenery. It’s about as good as it comes. And I don’t mean the trees.

We enjoyed Oxford, but The Grove was not impressive to me. It's packed. Tents are up against each other, packed with people and setups under them. The stadium definitely felt like high school.

We went back to campus the next morning to pick up a relative for breakfast and that campus was completely spotless. The Grove area was cleared and there wasn't even the tiniest piece of trash on the ground. Now, that was impressive!

That the one that's underground?

Asking because back in 09 we ended up at a bar that was underground. Cant remember the name of it but it was pretty cool. Not a lot of people in there for sure. The one I was at had an entrance off the street.

Penny bar is down some stairs if you go into moes or there’s a concrete walkway down to it on the outside of the building. It’s not really marked so you’d walk right by and not think much of it if you went that way

You may be thinking of the cellar ? Sort of fits that criteria but it was always deathly hot in there and I haven’t been there in several years

I’ve been there a few times with a friend who is an OM alum and we are with his frat brothers. Great bunch of people. All welcoming. Someone always presents me with a corn dog which I go ahead and consume. Everyone including me enjoys that. I haven’t been when we lose, so I don’t know how that goes, hope I don’t find out this year.
If you’re nice, they are.

Yes, go in Moe's and then down the stairs.
