No open flames. Cold finger sandwiches. Having to put all your alcohol in cups. Chandeliers.

Stupid rules for a stupid university.

My post on the SEC Rant. I stand by it:

quote:

I'll probably catch flack, but Saturday's in the fall at Oxford blow. They really do. I've been a lot of places for football games, some for LSU games, others not (off the top of my head, I've been to games at LSU, Arkansas, Ole Miss, MS State, Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, Arkansas, Kentucky, A&M, Texas, TCU, Notre Dame, UNC, Virginia Tech, Syracuse, Washington, Colorado State, Univ. of Ohio), and Ole Miss/Oxford, undoubtedly, is the most "challenging" to enjoy, if that makes sense.

It's simply entirely too small, too crowded and congested, and way too much of a hassle. Everything has long waits, expensive covers, hard to maneuver and get around, no live music and bbq grills, drinking is a hassle - even as an adult. It just doesn't cater well to large crowds. Finding a place to stay is a hassle, getting in/out is a hassle, maneuvering through the Square and The Grove (which is a nice setting, just way too compact and discombobulated) is a hassle. It's just such a PIA that it simply isn't worth it.

Take my advice and head up there in the spring when LSU plays Ole Miss in baseball. Much more enjoyable.

ETA: None of the above apply if you're (1) a college student, (2) have a place to stay in Oxford or very close nearby, or (3) have a friend or connection with a tailgate setup.

You may be thinking of the cellar ? Sort of fits that criteria but it was always deathly hot in there and I haven’t been there in several years

Just looked at the entrance on Google and i'm almost positive that's the one. I remember walking down those stairs. That black gate wasn't there back then though.

I would stay around the square and eat and drink before the game. Easy walk to the stadium. You won’t be able to get anywhere until after midnight unless it’s walking distance. Depend on game time. Make sure you have everything (tickets etc) downloaded to your phone. You will have no service all day.

Can’t dispute any of what GentleJack says.

Almost as if I wrote it . He’s exactly right .

Good luck going to BBB or Taylor grocery. Maybe if you started waiting this morning you could get into either at some point

fans are nice and engaging

Damn, I must smell bad or something. I have been to the last two LSU / OM games in Oxford and have yet to have been engaged by any fans in the Grove. Outside the Grove, yes, fans have been friendly but have yet been invited to stop and talk, have a beverage or anything.

I will also add that I am an OM alum and used to park my car in the Grove when going to games....current OM fans don't like to hear about that.

As others mentioned, just don't make a big show of pouring your beer into your red Solo cup and you should be fine. I once asked a OM police officer if I could smoke a cigar in the Grove, his advice was not to...said that he personally didn't care but that the campus was technical smoke free and that some "Karen" (his phrase) would surely ask him to make me throw it away. I gave him one for his advice and waited until later to light up.

It's a fun trip, never had any problems and always interesting to see what OM fans consider to be the premier tailgate in the SEC.

If it’s still there, some really good barbecue at the bait shop gas station by the airport. I think it’s called miss bees or something.

It’s off the regular path so it’s not crowded usually

Chicken wings, red solo cups and insurance agents from Tupelo who think they're Rhett Butler.

Any bars before or after the game near campus to check out?

Reading this post makes me think pregaming won’t be as easy as it is in BR.

100% . I’ve been 5 times to Oxford and never understood the hype . Overcrowded with entitled yuppies and it’s super small . The stadium sucks too

Oxford, along with Athens, is one of the best college towns imo.

The Square is pretty cool as well as The Grove. Scenery is impressive. We park at a church between the campus and the square. Can’t remember the name but we’ve been many times and have never had any issues finding a spot.

Stadium sucks; super tight with the seats. And, the concessions are absolutely horrible. If you think lines are long at LSU games, just wait. Eat before you go.

Going tomorrow, it’ll be my first game in Oxford. Not sure what to expect from the Grove.

Went to Gainesville last weekend, so this should be very different.

Looking forward to the experience.

I was the only person on the field, before the game, drinking a huge beer. I think they suspected I was from LSU.

You're from LSU and you went to Gainesville last week and Oxford this week? Did you lose a bet?
